  • I need help purchasing a new Guitar

Hi Guys

I am looking to purchase a new guitar. I play a wide range of music from country to blues to metal. I have been looking at the PRS SE 24/22 as well as the Jackson kelly KE3, the Ibanez XPT 700, the schecter blackjack C1-FR, and some LTD. I am looking to spend some money. What do you guys reccommend? Also the Roland cube 80X vs the Line 6 Spider iv 75watt? Which is better because i want a new amp as well?
Hey Max - welcome - I reckon you're gonna get diverse replies from your request. Sure, take everybody's comment into consideration, but ultimately it's what you want out of your gear that really matters. Good luck in your quest.
PRS are fantastic guitars. Very well made and very good quality, also very versatile. Where do you stay? If you are in the Jhb/Pta area, pop into Music Connection, they have a very wide variety of guitars and thier prices are very good (haggle a bit first). ?
If you are spending the money for a new amp, why not look at getting a tube amp of sorts?
      ?
I am in the johannes burg area, I have looked at the guitars at music connection, I just dont want to spend a lot of money on a guitar and then realise i dont like it. The PRS guitars are very well balanced guitars and the feel is exellent. I played the PRS Paul Allender signature and it is a beautiful guitar and the inlays are bats(cool) 8) . The Jackson kelly has a cool shape. Whats the price of a decent tube amp and is it better then the Line 6 and roland cube.

Thanks for responding PeteM and CDeee

Waaaaaay better: search around on this forum for Blackhearts, small Voxes, Champs and some more, and also check out the classifieds section. You might also go onto www.ratcliffe.co.za and check out the articles for a comparison tube power vs. sand solid state power, and see that you will be happy with 5-30W.
Posted the same response to a similar query a couple of months ago: if you pick it up and you fall in love with it, it's for you (given your list it's unlikely you're going to fall for a dud!). I think this factor is very important for general motivational longevity...

It's impossible for anyone else to say what you will or won't like. ? Like Jack Flash, I think that if you like it, it's a good guitar for you.

If you're not at the level where you can judge for yourself, as long as you buy a good guitar, it won't matter - your future preferences will be shaped by the guitar you choose now.
First thing I recommend is playing them all. That will tell you more about the instrument and how it works for YOU than any of us here could tell you. And look out for well cared-for 2nd hand examples - a good 2nd hand instrument can give you much more guitaring bang per buck.
Thank you guys for the advice. Yes i think its all about piking up those guitars and playing them. Cant wait to get a new guitar and an amp.

I took ur advice and went to Marshall Music and tested a tube amp, WOW ? What a big difference in the sound and tone compared to a Solid State. I am definitely saving up a little more money for a tube amp. I Played through a Hughes and Kettner 20Watt tube amp. It was amazing!
HeHe.....Once you get addicted to those little glowing bottles......there's no turning back......... 8)
