To Rock n Roll for MUSIC

So kinda a different discussion. I often see alot of my favourite guitarists playing songs i love, embelishing them, and putting so much in theat the song looks like its on the verge of implosion. Consider many bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Refused, The Mars Volta, At the drive in, Nirvana. The bands would on occasion prioritise "rock n roll" over the music or you could call it the the energy over music.
In bands I have in the past played I often found myself in some precarious situation in which the somewhat ignorant crowd stares at me saying "that was a bit... different." Its commonly especially uncommon in SA to find bands really pumping all energy into there show. When I say this I am going beyond the cliche "Power Slides" "on the knees solo" my most hated "synchronized jump" perfectly in time with a pause and hit in the music. I refer more to real out of control primal energy made b the music on the player when combined with the accompanying instruments.
Is there however in your consideration a point not to cross! For example Iggy Pop stabbing himself repeatedly with a broken bottle on stage, or the Dwarves wiping of feaces onthemself?

Check the example of a band I love maybe taking it to far in some eyes.

For me the moment it goes beyond simply playing instruments it stops being just music and enters the wider world of showbiz. I'm not saying that people shouldn't enjoy that, but to me it's far less important than the music. (I'm a bit of a snob about this, and utterly convinced that I am right). It's kind of hard though not to cross that line, the moment you have any kind of light show you're on the slippery slope.

Put it this way, when I listen to Pink Floyd or watch a DVD I could care substantially less about the light shows than I could about Gilmour's solos.

The world has been slowly dumbed down so much that we forget to appreciate anything for what it is. As Bob says once it becomes more than playing it is too far.

Trance music anyone? The only people I know who listen to that NEED to take drugs to enjoy it.

This is an unnecessarily divisive way of looking at it - they're not mutually exclusive... there's no cost associated to showmanship unless it inhibits playing and therefore the music suffers and if you're good enough to play hanging from the rafters and that's what you enjoy and no-one listening to the live album can hear the difference and it makes some members (not Bob) of the audience swoon then why not? Conversely, those flamenco players can get way out of control...

you see i have always loved seeing guys loose control on stage, but never one for extreme shows such as say a bon jovi show whereby the y are raised above the crowd. In that video i posted in with this topic I do love the fact that the guitarist throws his guitar about 10 seconds before the song ends and simply dances the rest of the song. I in a way find it almost more entertaining than him playing the peice supposed to be there.

Haven't watched the clip - connection too slow, but I'm OK with stage antics as long as they stay within the context of the show(if that's the right way to put it) and add to the enjoyment of it.

Once they get to the "WTF!!" kind of stuff you mentioned(Iggy Pop and Dwarves), the show is over for me.

Yeah. Maybe I need to think a bit more about this one. Certainly there are artists where various ...ermm... extras are part of the schtick. You wouldn't for example, expect to go to a Billy Bragg show and not hear some political statements. Poor old Iggy... you'd be mortally disappointed if you went to one of his shows and he didn't get going with the razor blade. Must be quite a burden for him.

I think he is aid because his guitar is to big to throw and he knows it, in his mind he is thinking
