This week's challenge, Bollywood Ringtone has had a record number of entries. Voting closes 7:45pm on Sunday
well here she goes, my first entry. http://www.box.net/shared/4nzmoxdbgi really basic ... strat bridge pick-up through a clean amp and some pitchshifting effect. beginner entry for me this time

Alrighty here's me and Nita's attempt. Nita was in charge of coffee and critique, inspiration. :) Beginner of course. Track 1: Guitar - Squier Tele Custom II through unknown effects on my floorpod. All those bends, goodness my fingers. Track 2: Rhythm track done in Acid. Track 3: Some weird synth sample thingy repeating the whole time. Track 4: Vocals by some strange looking fella we found overtaking us in a Checkers trolley on the N1. http://www.box.net/shared/3r3uqlj8km

For some reason I woke up at 4:30 AM on Sunday morning, started recording and ended up with my version of a Bollywood ringtone. A somewhat noisy piece that started of promisingly, but somehow a baseline from The Wall crept in, and a Brian May preset that sounded good on it's own found it's way in there as well...so now I don't know if it's Bollywood anymore. But it sure was fun, and it sure as hell got everyone else up early also.... :D
Anyway, as usual all done on Sonar 8.5, Guitar Rig 4 and Dimension Pro. I opted for electronic drums (Session Drummer) in keeping with the ringtone theme. Rythm and lead guitar done on my Godin. Having won the beginners category three times now, I'll stick to the advanced from now on...come hell or high water! Here's the link: http://www.box.net/shared/a43oeivbdh

Here's my entry for the 'Eastern Ringtone' challenge. Not sure if it's eastern or a ringtone but whatever... Category: Beginner http://www.box.net/shared/upvb0qppp0]http://www.box.net/shared/upvb0qppp0

Arabic Ringtone http://ratcliffe.co.za/music/a_alan_arabic_ringtone.mp3 OR http://www.box.net/shared/caveyddxmg Only three instruments - guitar, bass and percussion. The guitar is also driving the sampled string section. Percussion is tabla (India), udu (Nigeria) and shaker (everywhere).

Here's the link for my entry for this week's bollywood/eastern competition (advanced category) http://www.box.net/shared/x90ztht1cj The song is called Shangri La and you'll have to turn the volume up considerably to hear the little things.

http://www.box.net/shared/1km0mfd6eg I dont have an eastern bone in my body! Advanced

Didn't think I would make it this week, so I rustled something up in a couple of hours - couldn't let the side down ;). I cheated a bit - added a 5th track for the ringing effect, which BTW I created by playing the strings between the bridge and the saddle. http://www.box.net/shared/s2h4ulktrs Category A.

This was a tough one, i ended up using a pentatonic scale instead of harmonic minor ;) , anyway i hope it sounds like a middel-eastern ringtone, india meets arabia........with a bit of a groove: http://www.box.net/shared/5jvh9mqbuj

Here's mine. Three tracks. A category please. http://www.box.net/shared/ipncu6sd9n

"Indian Hard Rock Riff" Ibanez RGA121 back in action... The main riff/idea is a little cheezy http://www.box.net/shared/nl9n43k9yf
WOW!!!! lots of entries

will take listen just now, and then decide later this week who gets my vote.

Riaan, do you have one in a smaller size perhaps? 2.8mb is a bit steep for some.
Drat! This time I'm up against Arjun, AJB, Rene and others who can really play. ? Suspect it's going to be tough competing...

Nice one Rudolph and Pete, you get my vote for just the right level of cheesyness. That's what I think of when I think Bollywood.

It's amazing how many entries there are....very nice all round.
he-he-he.. Voted for myself for the first time since primary school... Seriously good stuff from everybody, so i reckoned at leat i will get one vote. wont say who got my second vote, but it was a close one!!
Drew gets my vote... Loved it, a little too 80s and not enough eastern, but the main riff ROCKS. Reminiscent of something from the Prince of Persia games, the soundtracks were awesome.

Rudolf gets my other vote. The vocals were a bit too cheesey some of the time, but fantastic work ?

Viccy, have you perhaps watched Flight of the Conchords?

PeteM another noteworthy entry, you compose really well dude. Was tough decision but I like the Arab rock more and the twing twing bugged me a little..
Wow...with so many entries, and such quality and variety it's really hard to make up my mind. Will have to listen for a couple of days before I make up my mind.

Will see what I can do about the 2.8 MB file, I encoded the MP3 at 320 kBs but maybe that's a bit much? What bitrate do you guys normally use for these comps?

Anyway, well done everyone - I think the sheer number of entries have pushed the competition up a notch or two! BTW I see I'm in beginner category even though I indicated advanced - I don't mind really, as long as the other guys with less recording resources available to them are OK with it.

Bret and Jermain are my heroes, but I hope you're not comparing my playing to when one of them plays air guitar.
That little skipping down return you play, is from the show. If I find out which ep it is I'll let you know ?

                  Aha, Ep1, 3minutes in. You're so beautiful ?
What bitrate do you guys normally use for these comps?
                    I useally go for 160 kbs 16bit.
Although i hate mp3's and bad for the ear, its user friendly for the net.
Really good to see so many entries. The standard of these comps are getting very high...

Great stuff all round, very hard to decide. :-\
MikeM wrote: PeteM another noteworthy entry, you compose really well dude. Was tough decision but I like the Arab rock more and the twing twing bugged me a little..
Hey MikeM it's supposed to bug you - it's a ringtone heh.. heh ?

Great to see so many entries - will make my decision later in the week after I've listened to them for a while.
This is tough. Rudolf is a clear winner in the Beginners category for me (the voice just cracks me up every time), but advanced is difficult. I'm going to take the brief strictly into account - Eastern/Mid Eastern, RINGTONE, ideally 30 seconds long. Probably be less strict on the last point, but it could be a tie-breaker.

@ Riaan - 16 bit, 192 constant bitrate, joint stereo. That's the lowest quality I can in all conscience go and is actually pretty close to 320Khz. 320 doesn't get you much closer to uncompressed, especially for the file size increase.

"...you could be a part time model" Yup, didn't have to look for long. Mind you, now I'm connecting the dots. I showed my mom a bit of the first episode on Saturday and I recorded on Sunday. Can't be held responsible for subliminal goings on. I also play something similar in another classical song. I think mine is different enough, more of a triplet than just a slur.
It happens to me when I design as well, influences see ? Either way, it's funny to note I think..
PeteM nailed the middel eastern ringtone, i can imagine this being a popular ringtone in the middel-east ?

                                Evolician, like it alot.

Rudolf, been watching some aladin lately ?

Squonk, this ringtone is when the bad ass in the movie gets a call.
Mwhuahahahaa! Knew the voice would help distract from my dodgy bends. But I give myself credit on that still, my fingers looked like a sinkdak trying to get that done. Either way, we were watching youtube videos of songs and trying to get the sound down, I was hammering away on the tele and Nita would shout stop at some point and we concurred that bit sounded "eastern indian", then we'd spend 40 minutes trying to do that again.

Concluded all the songs we used as examples sounded pretty much like any other dance song except for the distinct vocals. Then I accidentally discovered the bend-release trying to replicate a sound in one of the tracks and we were 99% there. But it still missed something quite critical. Then Nita didn't come in quite so usefull, she was no help keeping the tears from laughing out of the way trying to record the vocals through my "skype" mic. The vocals probably took the longest to get down, I had to cut back on blabbering so I could get the giggles under control for the next run.

Either way apart from the intro which I am truly proud of for creating that myself, the rest of the entry was 110% humor intended! In other words, please don't vote for me? Just listen to my dodgy bends! If I fluke win this one I only got one life left as a beginner. ?

This one was great fun though! Haven't laughed so much in a long time. Now as far as judging the advanced guys goes? Goeie genade! It was a tie yes and I had to go out of the norm listening to my top 3 another time. Great job EVERYONE!

Manny: It was my favourite when it first came out? But that's what? 15 odd years ago? I did however watch it plenty! Hahaha
Holy moly!! ? Some serious competiton here.

                                    Rudolph, very nice stuff.

AJB, what can i say that hasn't been said before?? ? You continue to kick my ass
Alan Ratcliffe wrote: Drat! This time I'm up against Arjun, AJB, Rene and others who can really play. ? Suspect it's going to be tough competing...
? Not in the least. I have 0 votes so far. ?
Regardless of which, i'd still like to hear what people have to say about my submission.

This time voting is going to be tougher because there are a lot of very good entries and i haven't finished listening to all of them.
