I will do. My son has piles of this music. I can't understand why there is so much of it - how do these guys make a living. In SA you won't that's for sure.
Most of them don't. They work day jobs. Karl Sanders, the brain behind Nile worked at a Ford factory around the time of the 2nd album's release. I don't follow these things closely, he's probably gone fulltime years ago. Opeth's main guy (Mikael Akerfeldt) worked in a music store until the release of around their fourth album IIRC.
And those are two relatively "well known" underground bands. There may be be several things to criticize about metal, but doing it just for the money ain't one of them!
I think there's so much of it because the cost of producing an acceptable-sounding album has decreased so much. Anyone with a PC and the music chops can do it, almost. The downside is there's too much, personally I don't even try to keep track of everything that's out there. Which means fewer and fewer guys can make a living out of it.
I swear I can hear some frank Zappa influences in Nile - or should I say, I'm sure he would not have been averse to them ...!
Lol, would've been interesting to hear that opinion.
The particular album I am listening to - and haven't heard anything else is 'Those whom the gods detest'.
Ooh that be the latest one, I haven't heard it yet. My copy is en route apparently.
@ doc - Whitechapel I'll have to check out. I don't like the other two you mentioned that much. Then again there are only 3 of these 'brutal' dm bands I really like: Nile, Decapitated and Morbid Angel.
