  • acoustic get together/braai social in jhb lets call it "Acoustic Day"

hello all........ a question how many acoustic players are there on this sitein jhb ... cos i'm thinking of putting together a braai/acoustic guitar afternoon ...either at my place or some other venue......... ( i live on a hectrare so i guess acoustic music won't be a prob for neighbours........

thinking of either a sat or sunday afternoon in october.......... will be free no couvert...... we have a hectare plot and a pool ......... so it's just a social for anybody on this site.......with maybe me also inviting a few acoustic players i know from jhb scene............ i know here in jhb bob is acoustic .so is big mike and maybe we can convince brent to play some of his fingerstyle for us...... would there be enough interest from you guys if i planned this ........ and anyone would be welcome ..... to play this is not a concert but kinda an open mic at home ...and safe parking heheheh we have an electric fence and 4 big dogs hehhehehe

if anyone would be interested pm me..and if we have some interest i'll set it up...cos even if just 3 or 4 people play it's all good........ and the only reason i can't do an electric jam is that the plot is only 1 hectare so i do have neighbours........ heheheh

so i'm thinking a soft acoustic afternoon with a braai and a pool for the swimmers....... but just cos it's soft con't mean you electric players can't come visit and play some mean acoustic blues....... or in fact electric guitar as long as it's soft .we'll justhave the no overdive/distortion law in place ..........sorry but i do have neighbours.........

i have enough gear to set this up ...... but might need some of the boys to volenteer to braai..... for as independant as i am .... afraid i lived in europe too long being able to braai not a skill i have ... but there is a braai drum here ....

ok so who's keen ...................?????????

and if i can convince a famous acoustic player to come i will ... maybe give a short workshop but thats not a promise but if steve newman or tony or greg is in town and keen i will ask ........ but thats not written in stone......... or else we'll just get Bob to teach us some x rated lyrics
and ask mike to demonstrate his baritone guitar .. or get gearhead to advise us on specs for amps that give natural acoustic sound...............

oh and if i do it at my house it's in glen austin midrand which is almost exactly halfway between Jhb centre and pta....... so 30 min drive from either side or from east rand or west ..... they don't call it midrand for nothing it's truly central...... and i'm just 5 min from the N1 olifantfontein off ramp ...with easy access from either jhb /pta N1... or R21 for east rand (benoni ) peeps .......

peace and light
keira
I would be interested in this definetly

Sounds good. let us know a date if possible ?

I'll play a tune or two... will have to bring the Glenmorangie for more!! ?
I don't play acoustic, but I'll come for the braai, and listen to the music, especially the "ONE CHORD WONDER".......lekker!!!! ?
Will kids be allowed seeing it'll have a picnic atmosphere?..........would love to bring Eli and Kmi.......... ?
fabulous ..... oh and someone pm'd me to ask if significant others are welcome.of course they are.... so would be any other acoustic music interested person .... the more the merrier........

and yeah kids too but the dogs do roam free........... they not aggressive but are huge so long as younger kids are not scared of dogs to a large extent.

the only rules i have so far is NO animals to be brought along hehehh i have 4 big dogs ones who don't like sharing their territory ...

          and the NO overdrive rule.............

and of course that you contact me to say who's coming so we don't get too many people cos if we do then i can find another venue but for up to at least 20 - 40 people my place is good .....

and Brent once i get an idea of a responce ....... then i will set a date ...... but prob 1st or 2nd sat or sunday not sure yet in oct ......we'll move quickly on this once there's enough interest......

No no! Princess Leia Keira, embrace the light side the electric guitarists must. Good for their soul it will be. Plenty of opportunities the dark side already presents.

As a married man I answer to a higher power, and the higher power has already let it be known that she does not wish to hear that song ever again.

Might be best to make it both electric and acoustic then - get more bums on seats and make it worthwhile for the venue.

Bob, as a wise man once said (and I repeat it here with only the greatest respect and admiration): "Cobblers!"

Come to the dark side, the luddites acousticians must... After all, use our effects pedals when it suits them they have. So time it is for them electric envy to admit and to buy that Strat they many years secretly desired have.

Hey Bob, I have them, never said I can play them.......hahahahaha........you're always welcome to come teach me some "one chord" numbers...... ? ?

Keira, thanx, have to expose the boys to some "civilized acoustic" and Flamenco!.......... 8)

hey alan...... i'll see.... what develops......... but i do think separate events might be better ......

i mean like 'acoustic day ' and then electric day" ........

cos as you know us musicians are a a fickle bunch and i'm sure some metal/rock players won't wanna sit thru 2 hours of acoustic fingerpickers or folk music and then there's the differences that acoustic musician plays at low volume and the rockers will wanna turn it up .......... and vice versa.......... a great example is recently i was forced to leave a club where i watching a really good band of awesome world class muso's here in jhb ..... but they were so loud ( to me that is ) that it actually hurt my ears ..... that i sat outside to hear the end of the set......... loved the playing but the volume which never seemed to bother the other punters was unbearable to me.( and yes i know if it's too loud you too old heheheh well i am old..... )

and no it's not that any style is better ..... or worse just i know in music "one size does not fit all" ..........

so maybe 2 events would be good......cos there seems to be way enough electric players here in jhb . and the acoustic players are less but there's some nice players and enough to play a whole afternoon ........

also that way if someone is really not into the style they can give it a miss.... or come and socialise........i doubt the metallica fans would wanna listen to me playing ...hehhe although i do shred a bit on the flamenco stuff heheheh ..... yet same as i would attend the electric day ...maybe even organise it or help to ... but i might not wanna play or even stay in a loud room all day ....... and not cos i'm rude or have musical snob values just cos it's not my thing........

                                    just some honest thoughts

                                    peace and light

ps and Bob i loved the coconut song ... why did the better 3/4 not like it????????? it went down a storm i thought ....... but you right....... don't anger the gods heheheh
