Updated: Official Competition Info (Please check back here once in a while in case we update the rules, info or prizes!) Competition Info: Record a new theme tune for the forum Any style of music is welcome goes but the focus must be on guitar There are two categories - Beginner and Advanced. You choose which category you would like to enter Winner will be decided by a forum poll, voted on by forum members Format: Track count: No limits to number of instruments or tracks in an entry Duration: No limits on duration, but shorter entries will likely get more downloads and listens (and votes) Any audio format will be acceptable, but try use compressed formats such as mp3, wma and ogg Your filename must contain: A or B to denote category (Advanced or Beginner) Your username. i.e. if you are "Fred" and you are entering the "Advanced" category, your filename will be "A Fred.mp3" To submit your entry: Once completed, upload your entry to a file sharing service like www.box.net or your personal web site Once it's uploaded, PM a link to your entry to Alan and also state clearly which category you are entering Rules: Entries close midnight November 30, 2009 Only one entry per member Entries must be your own original compositions. No covers and no soloing over someone else's track Competition is open to all regular GFSA members and moderators. Admins (Alan and Norio) may enter but are not eligible for prizes Prize winners must live in South Africa. Entries are welcome from other countries, but will not be eligible for prizes Prizes The winner of The Advanced category will win a Zoom G2 effects pedal and the winning piece of music will be displayed on the forum for the next 12 months The winner of The Beginner category will win a Boss TU-80 Tuner Prizes Sponsored by www.musicmadness.co.za

May I suggest that we drop the Beginner vs Advanced classes for this. Everybodies entries judged equally.

Mainly theme song.
The birthday theme was used for the first one, this years comp is for a new theme for the website.
So anything goes, whatever your enterpretation of a GFSA theme song would be.

I think that would discourage the beginners from joining in. I'd prefer to have two, maybe even three skill levels, each with a prize for the winner. The winner of the advanced category would be the official theme tune for the site.

Or erveryone can just enter into the same catogory, to remind them again that its suppose to be fun and not a competition, if you do win a prize its a bonus.....

But I do find the info and rules confusing. Will Alan be providing a backing track or not? The point he made has not been resolved.

Point 4 in the rules is ambiguous. •Duration: anything goes. Short, long, it's all good. Just remember that shorter entries will likely get more downloads and listens (and votes). The point here is - are we all voting or will we have an outside adjudicator? If it's the latter, does the size of the file really matter?

Point 4 in the info is also confusing •There are two skill categories - Beginner and Advanced. You may specify which you would like to be entered under and you may change category from competition to competition if you feel the need.
Does this mean we can change categories in this one competition?

This is an option that hasn't been considered.

OK - Updated. Should now be a lot clearer. Please let me know if any further clarification is needed or if there is anything I have missed.

One thing - would anyone mind if I have final say over category? Not a power to be arbitrarily wielded, and I'd rather not try and sort everything myself - just in case I find an entry is way over/under the level it was entered at...

On the prize front, we already have two great prizes from Matt at www.musicmadness.co.za, and we're waiting for confirmation from three other suppliers. I'm hoping to get enough that we can have a winner and second place for each category, as well as to be able to introduce a third "Intermediate" category.
