Yum, Yum, this will be great.

Steve Via is visiting next week, will discuss this with him and Andrew.

Seriously, will talk to a few friends and get there input!
a new theme would be cool i suppose.
It means that those who don't have the wherewithal to do the whole arrangement and recording thing can just record to the backing track
      either:
      1. get a few backingtracks to choose from(say about 3 of 4, otherwise the same backing track will be boring for each entry)
      2. or we could help each other out with a recording? giving it a wider spectrum of genre's perhaps with more people keen on entering.
I could speak to Bumblefoot (Ron Thal). I might be able to get him to supply a snippet of music for the backing and judge the entries. No guarantees, but he's pretty cool and owes me one. Unless we decide to keep it purely Sarf Effrican. It should then also be easier to get prizes from the brands he endorses (IIRC: Line 6, Vigier, Gibson, DiMarzio, Parkwood, Ernie Ball, Engl, etc.).
Regarding the voting - can anyone organise Joe Satriani to pass by and do some winner-selecting for us? Okay we'll settle for Clapton
That may not be as far fetched as it seems...this is the internet, remember! I'm sure many of our idols are down to earth and may well just do it if asked. I wonder what David Gilmour would say...imagine that! I would be really proud if David Gilmour commented on my tune, even if he said it's crap!
Well it was partly said in jest and partly very serious. Like you said, Riaan, this is the age of the internet. Easy (or easier) to get some down-to-earth famous musos involved ?

Bumblefoot sounds awesome - very keen on that!
I love both ideas , how about 2 categorys a new theme or orginial music for the more advanced players / recorders , and backing tracks for the beginner (say 3 or 4 to choose from) , that way we will get a better spread and everyone can enter . and perhaps encourage colabs in some way
so that the more advanced players help the beginners out ( or maybe even the other way round , who knows) .
What about contacting Mike de Jager?

I know Steve Fataar (who doesn't?) I think he would always be game. we have some of the local stoners guitarists here in durbs who could add to it.

What about one of our members, Caleb Quaye?
I would prefer a theme that incorporates acoustic guitar too somehow.

Steel and nylon. ? But if we are going to be all inclusive, we shouldn't forget 12-string (acoustic and electric), fretless, baritone, etc. ?
Maybe just have the rules cleared up before we have the same issues with the "outside of RSA borders" members. ?

A suggestion: perhaps we could, for this occassion, permit more than four tracks (maybe six) and increase the maximum time to 2 minutes?

Also, how about three official categories: beginner, intermediate and advanced?
Norio & I'll discuss it this week and get things moving.

Yes - this isn't a weekly challenge, so will track times and duration be open AFAIC, as it was with the last theme comp.

                            Definitely. We've already discussed that.

Norio and I discussed that quite a while ago. Comps with prizes are, by necessity, limited to entries from RSA.

yeah mike de jager is a good bet....... he's a face book friend of mine and on fb i see mention that he's been doing work with some greats ... satriani and some other big names....maybe he could ask one of them to give an opinion...........how cool would it be to get an international guitar legend to be on the panel.......

                              peace and light

How about we just make it plain and simple, and everyone who wants to enter records about 1min song of their own composition for the new theme song.
Been a bigger competition , i suspect any length will do fine ...... and maybe have a category to promote collaboration and one for solo entry's , and like proposed before maybe a few backing tracks for those who don't have the knowledge or facility to make backing tracks so that everyone gets a fair go at entering .
