Hi everyone.

So, I've been learning to play my guitar for the past two months. Though I have taken some lessons, they were a bit of a waste of time (and money). There didn't seem to be any objectives and we kept changing teachers. So I stopped not really having learnt very much.

Anyway, I'm now looking for a new teacher, in the Durban area. Someone who has experience as both a guitar player and a teacher. Any reccomendations would be appreciated.

Thanks
    Hi Rob.
There are a few teachers in Durban, it depends on how you want to learn. there are some that teach you classical through the grades, but it is slow and expensive so few do it. Personally I prefer this method.

There is also a rock school thing at Glenwood Village music. I haven't been so I can't comment.

Nice to see more Durban members here.

what style of music are you interested in and what guitar do you have?
      Hey Donovan.

I'm not looking to go the formal schooling route, even though it most probably is the best way. I think with work and other commintments, it would take a really long time too.

What I'm looking for is one-on-one tuition. I think it offers more flexibility as the curriculum wouldn't have to be fixed and it could be changed to meet my requirements/goals as I go along. I'd actually like to find a teacher or three I can have a chat to.

As far as style goes, I don't have an of that ? Musically, though, I think my interest chages depending on what I'm listening to on the day and I listen to almost everything ?

Guitars: I have a Yamaha C45 classical - bought it because I was told it would be easier on my fingers (true for a short while). It's not an expensive guitar, but I changed the strings and I quite like the sound coming out of it at the moment. I battle a bit with the wider neck, though - have small hands and short fingers.

My second guitar is a Squire Bullet which I bought 'cause I thought it would be fun. Also a cheapie, but I enjoy it, although I'm not 100% happy with the sound.

Since I don't really know much about guitars and what is good and what isn't, these will do until I learn a bit more and know exactly what to look for and how to find it.

Sorry, bit of a long post, but there you have it.

      Cheers

I stay in Toti, but drive around a lot.

Thanks - will look throught the link
Go to Barry Ford at his music shop in Umhlanga rocks drive. Lessons are quite expensive and he has a very full teaching schedule buuuuut hes very good ( I go there) . The entire course is all planned out and structured with lessons , notes, homework and everything.

          EDIT:

ohhh, thats a long drive then lol
            Thanks Byron.

The drive's not too long - I drive to Newcastle and Ladymith quite regularly, so Umhlanga is quite close by comparison

              Hi Rob .

I teach guitar in Gillits . Its easier to understand the guitar once you get a clear picture of the major scales on your fret board . From there its easy to understand the triads , modes and pentatonic stuff . You can use your majors as a reference for all the rest . There are only seven notes to understand . I have been teaching this for 17 years now and kids get it .

              Give me a call 071 182 3404

              Regards
              Fred

A good teacher is such a blessing.

I started taking lessons in fingerstyle acoustic guitar, about 2 and a half years ago, having previously taken lessons around 8 years earlier when I was still in school.

Tony, my teacher, showed up both of my previous teachers as having been guitar players, but certainly not guitar teachers.
I have improved so very much in the last 3 years and it makes me realise how pointless and average my guitar playing was before.

He teaches skype lessons too, http://www.tonycoxguitarlessons.co.za/skype.html and if you budget extends this far, and you are more interested in acoustic guitar than electric guitar, then I would jump on to his skype schedule, or perhaps first try out one of his saturday skype workshops.
