Here's my offering this week. One guitar - one take. I've won the Beginers category two weeks in a now, so I guess it's time to enter in Advanced. Category: A http://www.box.net/shared/aqekdkb1xj

Okay, this one realy is LAME LAME LAME. It's actualy so embarrasing my boyfriend was cringing, but I'll go ahead anyway. It's a translation of 'Drink to me only with thine eyes'. I am NOT a singer, so please cringe through the whole song and see if you can make out the words. http://www.box.net/shared/v9jz5zu07y Ps. went back under the table for this one. Don't have a mic.
I see I'm first off the mark in voting. Very nicely played everyone. I overlooked the part where it said "south african GUITAR" in the brief, but hey I had a good laugh. Also I seem to need to brush up my Afrikaans spelling. I think I'll post the original words to "Drink to me only with thine eyes" :
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I'll not ask for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But of love's nectar might I sip,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself but thee!

I'll spare you a Youtube clip
Well done everyone. I wasn't able to make it for this one, but looking forward to the next challenge!
My 2 cents...

Viccy you have a hit there ?
PeteM I love the clarity you get in your recording.
CDee well done on getting your old man involved, I enjoyed yours.
Squonk had me tapping my foot, very well done and a good theme
First Rule of Alan is, nobody talks about Alan.... ok, I felt like growing a mullet and a moustache and driving a pale yellow Cortina to the beach with a cooler of brandy and coke. Could be a theme for a 70's based PE detective show called Yster. Well done!!
@Donovan - LOL! Just don't mention the Piranha louvre in the back window, the CB aerials and the nodding head dog/cow. But dammit, I wasn't aiming for that! Are you sure that the mullet and moustache thing isn't your own suppressed desires surfacing? ?

I'm very impressed with all the entries - I expected a mix of styles and got it. Special mention to Squonk for his piece that could have easily been Mango Groove or Hotline (as I remember them anyway), PeteM for the Zulu guitar, Donovan nailed some of the stuff you used to hear on the TV programmes that had "bands" miming to backing tracks, CDee brought back memories of my army band days in Kimberley (why didn't I think to tap that experience for a track I don't know - a mental block to protect my delicate hold on sanity?). Viccy - kudos for the... er... interesting take of a trad song - when I realised what it was, I lol'ed, I really did.

I was, quite frankly, at quite a loss for this comp. Would have loved to do the Zulu guitar thing, but it's a style that's always completely escaped me - the timing is too loose. So I thought I'd just do an "inspired by" thing for the guitar and then do a Bakhiti Khumalo kind of a bass (but fretted) - only to discover I'm not a pimple on Bakhiti's backside and grasping the basics of his style would take me way too long. I did have fun turning the piezos from the rhythm guitar into the almost "tuned percussion" thing echoing left to right (basically a gate that only opens when I hit the chord really hard and then clamps down again quickly, with delay and modulation added).
Only listened to 3 so far

PeteM : lekka ZuluStreet, I can hear that with some African percussion and "mondfluitjie" , very nice

Alan : Cool idea, i like it when the lead guitar comes in and is that sum tapping I hear at the end?

Viccy : moenie skaam wees nie, jy het 'n a pragtige stem, en jy speel uitstekend kitaar.
Yeah, tapped riff. Embarrassing - that's why I dropped the level at that point...

Ag dankie man, I'm so glad nobody's eardrums burst.
Viccy that was awesome! haha ?
Now that we know you can sing we will expect vocals for all future releases. Perhaps a clause should be added to the rules to account for Viccy's new found talent?

Jy het my lekker laat glimlag...
This weeks winners are CDee (B) and Squonk (A) both with 10 votes each. So would both of you post me a topic for Monday and I will either choose the one that reaches me first or is most sadistic or combine the topics into something really challenging (* read impossible).
