  • Celestion Speakers...

Hi...

I have recently aquired a 68 fender bassman head. However now begins the search for speakers so that i can build up a 2x12 cab or a 2x10 acb. I have been looking for 12inch celestion greenbacks (8 ohm each)...but have not found anything in this country yet (I am aware that there are no distributors locally)...does anyone know where I can get a pair? Or otherwise does anyone know where I can get Jensen or Eminence from?

Regards
Jeremy
    Hey Jeremy.....Welcome to the forum

You, me and everyone else on this forum would love to know.... >☹

It seems that guitar loudspeakers in this country is a non starter.

    Celestion....Philtron in Pretoria are the agents....Hopeless... >☹
Eminence...Sound & Light City....They do not bring in the guitar loudspeaker ranges.... >☹
    Jensen....Who knows... ???

So if you find someone...please let the rest of us know.....I think most guys here are importing directly.
Celestions are awesome... trust me, I'd export you some if I could. :-\ ☹
How fondly I remember my own Fender Bassman some years back. I could ony find one dude to work on it and he replaced quite a few components but it kicked ass alright after that. My speaker was a single 15" Celestion 200W 4ohm (I think :-\) and damn how I wish I could have that back now... ☹
          Hi Jeremy,

You will need to import them, there are a couple ways to do so and couple of us here have access to them through our overseas suppliers.

Just for the record, your Bassman is going to want to see a 4 Ohm load, the original speakers in the Bassman 2 x12 cabs were Jensen C12N's, so to be most effective you want 2 x 8 Ohm's paralleled together.

Hope that helps! You may also want to check your Bassman has been looked over by a tech and that the electrolytic caps have been replaced and a few other maintenance issues have been taken care of.

          Cheers

            Hi Matt

Yeah I do know the whole story about the 4ohms bit... Havent opened the head up yet... Tested it on an original bassman cab before I bought it and it sounded phenominal!!! so I made the purchase. In terms of work on the head, I'd prob do any mods myself (having a masters in electonic eng kinda helps with that...also build all my own pedals...). It would just be the sourcing of the parts...

What kind of prices are we talking when importing the speakers? And what are the import options? I have looked at a few websites, but thats as far as I got...

            regards
            Jeremy

Ah, another techy! Welcome (said as I pull my psuedo Vulkan hand gesture).

RE parts, there are a bunch of places to source on-line, favorites of mine are www.tubedepot.com and www.tubesandmore.com.

RE your amp, do it justice and recap with Sprague Atom's. They are the BEST lytics in my experience and will last another 10-20 years, don't skimp on buying any old 'cheapy' from one of the usual suspects, the amp deserves some love.

Obviously you will need to pay import duties/VAT on your goodies, just the cost of doing business I'm afraid and in many cases with larger items like speakers you will need a clearing agent and you may be required to have an importers license as well.

Smaller parts will typically come through the mail if shipped by USPS and you will pay your duties at the Post Office.

Well I'm not at liberty to discuss prices here, we are not permitted to discuss posts of a commercial nature as per request, and I FULLY respect that, if you want to get a price, just shoot me a PM or e-mail.

              Cheers

Years ago, I got a quote of R1000 per Vintage 30, from a local supplier.. cant remember who tho, sorry!!
It was cheaper to get a Carvin cab at R5500 loaded with the same speaker!!!
                  Nice!!

By the way, anyone have any feedback on Celestion G12H's?

Sure, if you turn the amp up loud enough.
? OK, fun was had, now for the serious answer:

I can speak about the Heritage versions. In short, they are great. A good recreation of one of the all-time best classic rock speakers. Slightly scooped mids, a punchy low end and a bit of grit in the highs. A bit harsher than the G12M which is smoother and has a more pronounced midrange, but a looser low end (they actually work well together in a 2 X 12 or 4 X 12). The H is also more efficient, a bit louder.
Oh, and in an open back cab, the H is the better choice because of the tighter lows. The M tends to flub out completely.
i got one in a 2x12 open back cab with a vintage, the mix actually sound really good, but i don't play the cab much, i lend it to our other guitarist and he's very happy with it and so am i, sounds heaps better than the eminence that was in the hotrod deluxe that he was using....

                            Compared to a V30?

Wow, if they can give you a Greenback for R1,700, take it! I can't land them anywhere near that as the shipping is almost as much as a single speaker... it does they that have zero stock though.... but if you can hold them to that price I'd do it! Knowing Yebo they may well say they can get it, but it will come via sea freight, so expect a 60-90 day wait... in which case it isn't that great a deal

Their Alnico Blue cost though seems excessive ???

                              Cheers

V30 is more responsive and accurate and the best note definition - even better than the H in an open-back cab. Probably the best ever hard rock/thrash speaker (especially in a closed back cab) and it also has a better power handling, but I'd prefer an H or M for classic rock as the V30 can get a bit tiring to listen to over time.
Ok...thx to all the replies! I got in touch with yebo and they quickly responded with the following (this is for anyone interested in ordering from them):

                                  Quoting Yebo:

                                  "Hi Jeremy

Normally the speakers are ordered on request. We dont carry the stock on a ongoing basis as the demand for it is not that strong.

If you like you can place a web order and once we receive it the item will be placed on back order. This gets picked up by the buyer who will order it from overseas. Should the supplier have stock the back orders take approx 4 - 6 weeks. (The time duration depends on the dates that the order has been placed, when the freight leaves depending on weather etc.

The web site gets updated daily so what you see is what we see."

But now I do have a further question:
The G12M's are rated at 25W (vs the C12N which are 50W)... When connecting them in parallel, will they actually be able to handle the 50W output of the bassman? I do not want to drive the speakers to hard and risk blowing them...
Essentially, current (and power) will be split equally between the two speakers when wired in parallel, so provided the speaker ratings are rms values, you'll be ok.
