Is it just me and my terrible internet connection or was the forum down between 10h15 this morning and 11h00?
I restarted the services just in case but I don't know if it was actually down or if iBurps was just giving me hassles. Let me know please, and also include your internet connection if you don't mind.
Thanks!

Francis and I had issues with the chat but seems better now ?
I'm on adsl. IS.

there appears to be a problem hitting international sites ..... and it appears to be affecting everyone .
cain
No dude, the whole world is comming to an end!
CDee
Got the message "Connection refused by remote host" from about 10:20 - 11:00. I also tried other international sites, they were alot slower than normal, but they did work eventually.

Couldnt refresh any page, everything was just hanging.

worked fine for me. We're on Telkom ADSL.
I was wondering why it was so quiet...
cain
The problem was something to do with international lines, as the site loads some adds and images off other sites, these links keeps things from loading properly. Everything is fine now ...

Jip, the forum was down for about an hour this morning.
This was on the IS, MWEB and Telkom networks.

The problem seems to have been on-and-off for the last 2 days. Also have a Telkom adsl line......still takes a bit long to load!
MikeM
Any ideas what's causing this?
cain
Norio is working on it Mike

Thanks Francis ?
Database issues again, I'm afraid. Fixed within 2 hours and will be faster next time but I need to figure out what's putting strain on the DB. Seems like something intensive is running between 9 and 10 that is bringing the DB down. No cron jobs run at that time so I'm suitably flummoxed :-/
It's working now but I can't guarantee we won't have issues tomorrow morning. Have called in some help to try and sort it out.
FatBoy
Can you see any irregularities on Google Analytics? Heavy amount of hits possibly from spambots or the like?
NorioDS
Haven't checked yet, Fritz.
On the plus side, I've put in a script to kill any database queries that execute for longer than 200 seconds. This should work 100% and, this way, only those sites causing issues to the server will go down. Not GFSA (which never causes issues).
I'm convinced it's one of the new sites my partner(s) put on the server that has some seriously under-optimized SQL queries. Have contacted them about it and will see what they say about recent work they've done.
In summary: We should be fine now. Tomorrow should go smoothly. Hold thumbs and think positive thoughts and all that ?
FatBoy
Ah I wasn't aware that its a shared server. Holding thumbs!
NorioDS
It's not a shared server in the traditional sense of the word. I only share it with myself but, yes, there are other sites on the server taking resources and sometimes they go overboard ;(
The real trouble is that I'm no server admin guru and can't afford one yet so I have to learn stuff on the go ? Fun and exciting!
FatBoy
Ah ok, yea cool man, best way to learn I always say! Jump in! ?
NorioDS
Trouble is, I don't wanna learn this stuff any more ?
I've been learning all sorts of Linux server stuff since I was 16 (nearly 10 years now) but it's not fun for me. I'd much rather be coding something or playing my guitar ?

I feel your pain. Wait till you have 4 Linux Clusters with failover between them and debuging the heartbeat not working. Just to find out that the one fibers between them is bugy ?
I would love to quit my job and play guitar all day long :?
