A few things I've been paying attention to recently....

1) John Hiatt - Live From Austin, TX. This is from the admirable Austin City Limits show. Hiatt had a band of young (at the time of filming) guns around him. He himself is a strong performer. Michael Ward on guitar is excellent in a noisy kind of way. It all comes to a feedback-rich climax on "Perfectly Good Guitar"

2) Darrell Scott, Danny Thompson & Kenny Malone - Live in NC There were some clips of Scott posted on GFSA a while back. This album is quite different - Scott's got his Les Paul cranked up, and really this is power trio stuff for the most part. Danny Thompson, it shouldn't need saying, is mighty on the bass and fits his unique musical voice into the rock trio format.

3) Wilco - Ashes Of American Flags. I'm still getting my head around this one, but I have to say that Nels Cline is a monster.

AlanRatcliffe

I've been watching Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers PBS Sound Stage. Good songs, solid performance, nice audio quality and more vintage/collectable guitars and amps than you could shake a stick at.

Ladies and Gentlemen - The Rolling Stones DVD of their 1972 tour with awesome Mick Taylor guitar work... stunning stuff.
Setlist

The tracks in the film followed the running order of a typical setlist of the 1972 tour (with the exception of "Dead Flowers," which was played at one of the filmed shows in Ft. Worth and only occasionally elsewhere on the tour). The song "Rocks Off," which was played at all the 1972 tour shows, was notably absent from the film.

* "Brown Sugar"
* "Bitch"
* "Gimme Shelter"
* "Dead Flowers"
* "Happy"
* "Tumbling Dice"
* "Love in Vain"
* "Sweet Virginia"
* "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
* "All Down the Line"
* "Midnight Rambler"
* "Bye Bye Johnny"
* "Rip This Joint"
* "Jumping Jack Flash"
* "Street Fighting Man"

You know when I was a kid I saw a Rolling Stones movie and I’m sure it was this but it was good. Now, just this past weekend I was at a Look’nListen in Boksburg which was a challenge in itself but anyway, this DVD was there and I thought about getting it and I didn’t but I think I will go back after Christmas because right now there is just too much testosterone in the centers hey.

It is really good, though very traditional 70s style filming (which enhances it for me!). It is only a concert movie though, and I feel that Gimme Shelter the doccie is a better... well... document of the time (leading up to Altamont), and better movie but far less performances unfortunately. The performances rock though...

A few things I've been listening to of late

1) Heron - The Dawn Anthology
Note to self: Read things PROPERLY. I'd thought this was Mike Heron's band. Post Incredible String Band he had a band first named "Mike Heron's Reputation" and then simply "Heron". Ha! Turns out there was ANOTHER band named Heron and this is what I got here. The ISB influence is clear and they seem determined to be even hippier - recording two albums in an open field. But they can't match the lack of inhibition and the soaring imagination of the ISB at their best.

2) Fairport Convention - Heyday
This is compiled from recordings Fairport did for BBC in 1968 and 1969 (back then the Beeb had limited "needle time" and so used to record bands or broadcast them live). For most of this period Fairport were really a 60s West Coast band, with lots of covers of songs by the likes of Richard Farina, Dylan and the Bryants. 3/4 of the way through you hear them start to morph and by the last two cuts they have transformed into and English folk-rock band - inventing that genre as they did so.

3) John Martyn - Inside Out
This is the 2nd disc that Martyn cut and released in 1973 (the other being the better known Solid Air). I have a few Martyn albums from the early 70s now and there's a clear progression as the vocals become jazzier, more slurred, more integrated with the music and the electric guitar becomes more prominent. This album has done nothing to make me change my theory that Mr Edge is hugely influenced by Martyn - quite the reverse in fact. I'm also starting to think that some of him rubbed off onto Big County as well.

4) Kaleidoscope - Pulsating Dreams
It's tempting to conclude that these guys are trying to be the American Incredible String Band, but they have a far greater rock component in their music. This is what a 60s West Coast rock band might sound like if they'd been dropped off in the middle east and jammed with the locals for 6 months or so. Very interesting. David Lindley was a member, and there is some very fine guitar work on these recordings. "World Music" exisited long before Paul Simon or Peter Gabriel or even Johnny Clegg. Interestingly in their more straight ahead moments they bear comparison to early Fairport Convention - and this leads me to pondering that if you want a really good 60s West Coast rock band then don't look at the West Coast, look in North London.

Right now I'm just listening to Singemonkey's first tinnitus (which is only in one ear and pretty faint luckily). I feel a bit skaam that I'm not listening as widely as some on this thread.

I really want to hear that Fairport record. And the Kaleidoscope sounds pretty interesting too.

The guy I've discovered recently is Tampa Red. Just a wonderful song-writer with a heart-breaking slide guitar style.

Not the same tracks, but you can get the general idea from some clips on Youtube. These feature Judy Dyble on vocals and so predate Sandy Denny's joining the band. If you think the other vocalists looks or sounds familiar that's because he's Ian Matthews of Matthews Southern Comfort fame.

Reno Nevada - written by Richard Farina

Time Will Show The Wiser - written by Emmit Rhodes
