I recently bought myself the RG2228 GK so I'm just checking out lots of the new Djent stuff just to get some ideas and a feel for the style ? I think that out of all the major popular movements in metal it's definitly one of the better ones, but I'm sure it'll get oversaturated and generic soon enough. A friend of mine showed me the new After The Burial album and it was awful, you can just hear it's a major rush job - sounds like generic metalcore but on 8-string, which is a shame cause their first cd was promising, not amazing just promising.
I highly highly highly recommend Animals As Leaders though, that stuff is intense and quite original, which is fairly unusual for metal these days ? and Periphery is okay, they've got some really cool riffs but on the whole the screaming then singing thing is a bit too metalcore for my liking.
I can't stop listening to Animals as Leaders, totally influenced me to move to 8-string but need to find one more affordable... Bothners Plumstead sold their RGA8 :'(
AAS has all the cool drumming and programming of Periphary minus the crap vocals, plus virtuoso guitarwhich is awesome!
Cloudkicker has some great moments too!
I'm in complete agreement ? AAL is probably the best band I've heard in the last 5 years ? Started learning On Impulse cause the lead section is all on a 7-string, some great hybrid picking exercises all over there ^_^
I don't know who bought the RGA8, but I got my Prestige RG2228 from the Plumstead Bothners ? I'm a bit naffed about the EMGs, and the fixed bridge and the fact that it's black...but hey f*** it I've got 8 strings! ?
To be honest I wouldn't go for the RGA8 though, apparently there's an issue with the counter stud in the back of their edge bridges not being sunk properly and they have a really bad tendency to rip out. Also I read a thread about how the nut can crack if you use a big gauge string, if you look on the Ibanez site you'll find that though the bridge on the RGA8 is the same as the RG2228 the nut is a different part. I use an .80 gauge for my low E so it's a bit ridiculous but it feels good and gets a nice clarity ?
I'm personally a big fan of Basswood, I know it's boring to look at but sonically I prefer it to all the other combinations of wood I've tried and even though the RGA8 is Mahogany I really wouldn't go that route. The mahogany on the RGA8 is pretty low grade and soft, combining it with those awful stock pickups just makes mooshy tone. It's a lot of money but it's a specialist instrument so rather just save up and take the dive for the prestige or a custom made model.
If you'd like you can PM me, I can give you the number of a guy who could potentially build you a custom 8 string locally. Any shape or neck profile you want, whatever wood combinations as well, if you really want the locking system of the RG2228 (which really is the best way to go for ERGs) you can buy it seperately from www.IbanezRules.com and then get that installed. It wouldn't be cheap though, possibly in the region of R14k but when you consider that it'll be custom it's kinda worth it and still cheaper than the RG2228.
Cloudkicker has some great moments, no doubts there, but unfortunately after getting into AAL the bar has been raised pretty high ? Periphery have potential but the vocals are a bit hit and miss -_-
