All this talk about hybrid picking led me to dust off my copy of "Live at Crawley" by Richard Thompson and Danny Thompson. This was recorded live for radio at a festival in 1993. Just the two of them. The recording is not fantastically good, and Danny's often too low in the mix for my liking (and I like to listen to Danny Thompson) but there's no knocking the quality of the playing here.
Interestingly even though he's playing with a bass player (and a very good bass player at that) Richard Thompson makes extensive use of the hybrid technique - just as he does when playing solo. EG he might be playing a rock 'n roll-ish thing and he'll set up that typical 5-6-7 riff with the pick and reel off the solo with the fingers.
I recently saw an interview with Todd Parkes (no mean bass player himself). He was talking about the bass being a "harmonic timekeeper" IE it has a role that is party harmonic and partly rhythmic and thus links the melody to the percussion. The way that Richard Thompson is using the hybrid technique on this disc means that Danny Thompson can concentrate more on the harmonic and is less constrained by the rhythmic.

a few days ago i dug out some of my Diana Krall cd's .......... her work is so slick.....and her guitarist is slow deliberate and oh so tasteful..................with perfect note choice.. a true lesson in how to "play less and say more"

Also been scratching and scratched out The Blues Brothers. Simple but I like it. Why dont people have horn sections anymore. And J.Geils Blow Your Face Out getting a run as well.

What Gearhead would do to get a horn section in our band. It's hard enough just finding bass players and drummers, horn players will be near impossible to find. Back to topic, listening to CCR right now

Pentangle Sweet Child. There's always such a lot of talent on display on the early Pentangle discs. Bert Jansch and John Renbourn on guitars, Danny Thompson on bass, the underrated Tony Cox on drums and percussion. Disc one of this set is live and we get all the manifestations of their blend of folk, blues and jazz.

Long time since I listened to Pentangle. Thanks for the reminder. Must also listen to The Winter Consort again.

Ja, but maybe you can track down a few kazoo players and gooi thru some effects or wot?
I've got to get some Credence, only got old vinyls. I do however have John Fogerty Blue Moon Swamp (which is so groovy) and Deja Vu all over again (which is OK but not so groovy really).

Met her and her hubby (?) Elvis Costello in NY a couple of years ago... as it usually goes, you meet someone nice and decide to give their work a listen... and nope, couldn't get into it. Too slick I say but I can hear the appeal.

Katy Lied by Steely Dan.
The Dan always made sure there were some great guitar parts and guitar solos on their albums. This one is no exception. I was intrigued to find out that one of my favourite Larry Carlton solos turns ("Black Friday") turns out to be by Walter Becker. Oh well...

I have a small pile of CDs that I got for Xmas that I am working through. I would like to give each one a proper listen before New Year. Katy Lied was one of those.
Now I am busy with Music For Two by Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. There aren't a lot of albums featuring Bach pieces arranged for banjo and double-bass. These two guys are both fab players.

Yowzer! This is one
smoking album. Not just the Bach but also their own compositions and a Miles Davis piece. The best instrumental album I have heard since I got hold of a copy of Richard Thompson's wonderful
Strict Tempo!

I've got that one. It's their 2nd album and a big step up from their first, largely because of the change of lead guitarist. I think it's Mark Ford on that album. They really have that whole two guitar thing cracked.

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion had a MASSIVE influence on my playing style.
Right now I'm listening to John Butler Trio, Ainsley Lister & Eric Sardinas

When I was in Look & Listen today I got "We Wish You A Metal Christmas and a Headbanging New Year"

My sister bought me the David Gilmour Live in Gdansk pack and listening to it now. Since this is my first exposure to David Gilmour ( ??? yes I know, I've been living under a rock) , I can't compare it to anything else he has done. I'm really enjoying it though. I've also never listened to Pink Floyd ? ? (yes I know, how is this possible?), anyway, I'm going to be doing so soon ?
