The Slide Brothers -
Robert Randolph presents The Slide Brothers
I'm trying to remember where I heard about this. I give up. But I'm glad I DID hear about it.
The Slide Brothers are a quartet (possibly put together for this recording) of lap steel and pedal steel players rooted in the
Sacred Steel tradition. Randolph is from the same tradition but has a band playing secular music and was named in Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists.
The disc opens with two of the guitars (they never seem to have all four active at the same time), one pedal steel, one lap steel, wailing and screaming at each other as an intro to their version of the Allman Brother's "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'".
The tones are biting and dirty. The playing is great - passionate, rocking and skilled. The vocals are pretty good. The whole thing burns and rocks like crazy. Steel players getting funky? Believe it.
