Miles Davis - Kind of Blue. This is way out of my comfort zone, but I'm finding it interesting nonetheless. There's a large amount of improvisation going on here (Davis kept the basic themes from the band until very close to time of recording so that they wouldn't bring too many preconceived parts to the studio) but these guys (Coltrane, "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans plus the boss) have such inventiveness and such great melodic gifts that it's really engaging even if, like me, you don't really know all the theory that underpins what they are doing. I hear a lot of stuff that takes the same broad concept but is nowhere near as interesting and often downright tedious. No such problems here - these guys are stunningly good musicians.
I must give that one a proper listen. I haven't got into it yet. I like
Bitches Brew and
Milestones (I think that might have the same lineup as Kind of Blue) but this one hadn't really grabbed me yet.
