Hello
So on Saturday a couple of friends and myself went for a quiet beer or two at a bar/pub called Magics on old Vereeniging road in Eikenhof.[ Deep South ]. Nicely nestled in we were when this big Dodge bakkie pulls up with gear at the back. Now I've heard about the Band of Gypsys before, but never seen them play.
The gear starts making it's way into the venue and really, this stuff needs to be is a museum or something. 1950's Marshall head with a cab that's probably the same age. Axes consisted of a genuine road worn '59 Fender Strat 8), 60's Jap strat [ or that's what he said ] and the coolest relic Fender P bass I've seen in my life. The Peavey bass amp head probably from the early 70's or so being the latest piece of equipment. Even the effects pedals were antiques. Roland Wah, Space Echo and then another pedal that is powered by one of those massive Eveready batteries. They play a bunch of original stuff with the added Hendrix and ZZ Top cover here and there.
All in all it was epic to see these old men [ all close to 60 ] play full out rock. They are playing there every saturday afternoon from about 14h00.

I used to watch them in the 70's. The band was actually a family affair then, Dad and sons.
The Dad looked about 50 then, so he must be retired ?

Correct, from what I heard they were a family affair, the guitarist/vocalist is the only one still there from the original line up. His name is Peter.

Yes, I saw these guys I'm sure it must be about 30 years ago. Doing plenty Hendrix stuff and other stuff. Family outfit as Squonk said and I remember seeing the old man who looked 50+ to me. I remember they did a gig at the Riebeeck hotel in Springs which was great. Except that Springs was in the clutches of the New Wave/Punk thing and lots of the kids didnt really catch on to what was going down. But the kids were awright. I'll have to try and get to see this lot again.
