Here is this weeks challenge fresh from the pen of evil Alan.
Alan Ratcliffe wrote: I was thinking along the idea of music for an advert. The kind of thing we may end up having to do exactly to spec for money. Must suit the product and be EXACTLY one minute long. Product? Hmmm... a new shampoo and conditioner. The graphics are a woman twirling through a field of flowers with her hair flouncing around her (as girls and hair in these ads tend to do).  ? Attention must be given to the fadeout at the end - a quick fade, no sudden stops or abrupt cutoffs (as I've noticed with many competition entries lately).
Entries must be submitted Before midday Thursday 18th. Please state clearly in your PM to me which category A or B you wish to compete in, the choice is yours not mine. for other rules and info check this thread http://www.guitarforum.co.za/monthly-competition/weekly-competition-rules-and-info/

...but entirely realistic of what you will be asked for if you are given the opportunity to pitch to do the music for an ad. I've been there...

Why do we need to fade out?
Just realised that not everyone will have the ability to engineer a fade - especially those like yourself who are recording direct onto a single device with little to no editing capabilities. So I'll amend to "If you can" - It's not an essential requirement any more.

My reason for including it was I've noticed that many comp entries - even some of the best ones - tend to be very sloppy with the ending, with sounds cutting off abruptly or different fades on the different instruments creating very haphazard endings. I wanted to force folk to learn how to do fades in their recording software as a learning experience.

But listen to a TV ad - there will always be a quick fade at the end. While with music, one usually times a fade over a number of bars, ads usually do it very quickly.

I've acquired my recording soundcard. Now I will hold my breath and jump into the world of recording(above the table). I think an annalogy of coming out of my shell might be adequate. Thanks Alan for the complete and utterly uninspiring topic.

Don't be too surprised if I don't enter or revert to going under the table again. This is a big learning curve.
I'm really going to try get something together.

Gee. Ouch! ? Just trying to push everybody a bit (myself included). We don't always find ourselves in the position where we get to create the music we want to create, and we have to learn to stretch into unfamiliar (and uninspiring) territory to fulfil the brief and pay the rent.

Could have been worse... I could have made the product a badly dubbed French laundry detergent. ?

Or worse still, it could have been toilet cleaner or something. Shampoo ain't too bad. Nice topic, and good practice.
Toilet duck actually hav been awesome...nice and aggressive track while the toilet duck kills the germs - ?
Na, I like this one Alan - I see where you're going with this! Very good call.

I may just give this one a go...
i really like this one ....... bloody good idea . now whos gonna call the ad agencies for them to judge

Fame, fortune, glory, groupies, free shampoo for life!
Nice one Alan.. Am I allowed to enter one of my previously broadcast ads?! ?

Doing ads is fun!! I'll try a nice 30 seconds one if time allowes.. There are quite a few things to look out for in ads, to make an item sail from the shop counters!
The same rules apply to the 4 tracks? I guess so, but I just had to make sure..
??? this is actually a bit more difficult than i thought it would be....put some ideas together and sounds more like a low buget porno than anything else ?
Come to think of it we haven't had a low budget porno Topic yet ?
What type of music do they use in these anyway? ???

Not that I watch Porn.. But try using a wah-wah pedal.. Playing slow funk.. Think '70's.. It always sounds cheesy, thats why I think thats what is used.. Or badly orchestrated music..

Now before I'm going to put my foot in it, I'll leave this topic with grace.. ?
