After hearing a Muse version of HOTRS, I learned that a bunch of musos have covered this song. Also, its an old folk song and not a The Animals song ( as I always believed)

Anyway, thought I'd do my own version. All the guitar work is me, the rest is backing track I downloaded.

Please comment on

a) The song itself
b) The quality of the recording. I'm trying to learn more about recording and how to improve recording quality. So if you have any suggestions/advice or hear something that could be done better, please lemme know.

That song has quite a history. It was recorded at least 8 times before the Animals had a hit with it. The earliest known recording was by one Clarence Ashley in 1938. Ashley said he learnt the song from his grandfather.

It's mostly regarded as a traditional song. Origins and age are unknown. Bob Dylan recorded it in 1961 and claimed a songwriting credit for it. This pissed off Dave Van Ronk who had been playing the song in concert and was planning to record it himself when Dylan got a recording contract and decided to put the song on his first album. Van Ronk didn't miss the irony of Dylan being accused of plagiary and copying after the Animals had a hit with the song in 1964.
Yup, after hearing the Muse cover, reading the history of that song is fascinating.

There's even a Jimi Hendrix bootleg of the song.. somewhere in cyberspace. There's also a killer 70s rock/psychedilic rock version... Pink Fryad or someone.. Can't remember the name now.

But its also a killer version.

The organ sound is quite retro. So the juxtaposition of that organ tone with the more contemporary guitar sound is interesting. I tried to imagine the track with vocals over it, and for me the organ could have been louder in the mix (or the guitar softer) in order to bring out the colour that the organ part adds.
                Interesting.

Thanks for the feedback. Like I mentioned, I used a mp3 bactrack, so I don't think its possible to boost certain things (like the organ) for instance. But yar, when the organ kicks in, its pretty rad.
