  • Review: Modern Vox AC15CC1 112 Combo

Okay, so I bought the Vox AC15 cc1 six weeks ago and I thought I would try to give a review on it. Bear in mind that I am somewhat new to this ? . I was looking for a low watt tube amp that would give me decent tone and decent overdrive. I’m just going to break it down to likes and dislikes.

Starting with dislikes:

Only one channel.
The reverb is absolutely awful.
The tremolo function is so-so
There is still a slight tremolo even when the tremolo effect is turned down to zero.
The foot switch for the tremolo and reverb feels and looks cheap.
Plastic knobs and some plastic finishing.

Likes:

The tone, obviously (the reason I bought it) ?
From “clean” (because it still has slight clipping), to light crunch, to all the way dirty, I really like the overdrive in any setting. To me it sounds great.
Although I mentioned some plastic finishing, overall I am very happy with the quality and look of the amp, it’s really solid, weighing in at about 22.5kg.
Very simple and uncluttered controls.
Other reviews mention reliability issues but I’ve had none (granted, I’ve only had it for six weeks)

Before I drove up to Joburg to test it, I read a stack of reviews, so I pretty much knew going in, what I might not like about the amp. It’s pretty much a one trick pony, but it has exactly what I was looking for. I played it, liked it, and bought it. Turnkey was having a sale, so I got it for R3600.

A little off topic - I’m busy breaking the speaker in today by playing music through it, surprisingly it sounds pretty good ? . I thought it would sound dirty (with the gain knob turned up slightly otherwise there is no volume what-so-ever), but it’s still clear and quite pleasant. Only when I turn the gain past halfway, does the music audibly (to me) start breaking up. So, with all that I’ve read and heard, it should sound even better once the speaker has loosened up.
    Cool review Sean. Sounds great!

Is it loud enough to jam with a band? Not really looking for a small venue suitable amp, but one loud enough to jam in a 5 piece band and not get lost.
...we keep on asking Sean to turn it down :-[ -> yes it's loud enough to even gig in bars etc.

You have to realise that tube amps sound significantly louder than sand solid state ones at similar wattage. This is, amongst other reasons, because a lot of watts in solid state are spent on feedback so the sound is bearable.

Another (often neglected) point is that watts are converted into decibels in the speakers at a very varying efficiency. Speakers run from roughly 85 dB/W/m up to, say, 102. The difference between those equates to a factor of 50 , meaning it's quite easy to blow a 2x100W into 87dB hifi system (realistic values) out of the water with your 15W into 4X12" each 101 dB guitar amp (realistic values). ?

Also, tube amps are typically rated at the power they produce when they are just at the point of breakup or clipping or whatever its called. You may find that is at volume on 6 or 7. Then you still have a long way to go to 12. Whereas solid state amps will produce the rated power at volume on 12

As Gearhead said, definately loud enough, I don't even come close to cranking it :'( but when I'm not with the band, and the wife is at work...... ? ? ?

Wow, i never knew that about speakers, makes sense i suppose. How do you know when your speaker has "loosened up" and how long does it take?

Depends on how heavily doped it is and how stiff the cone material. Celestion Blues are known for taking ages, but some speakers'll break in within a week. Some guys put new cabs face down on foam and play a CD or a mp3 player through the amp for 24 hours to accelerate the process.

Would looping pink noise through it help speed up the process? Or would it just ensure that all frequencies are covered?
Drum 'n Bass or dub would work better. It's more the bass frequencies you need to pump through. Loosens up the low end and sweetens the highs.
? a new amp is like a kiddo. Teach it well and it will behave. Don't feed the infant drum 'n bass! SRV/EC/BB! ?

Actually, been feeding it a lot of Third Day... Cheesy Tongue
Third Day!!! Good stuff. Your amp will be a happy amp....... ? ? ?

Mac Powell voicel is so sexy... LOL. Got to see em twice in concert, last year in Atlanta, GA and a few years ago in Raleigh, NC. Great band, really blew me away.

                                Cheers

                                Matt
Oh man, I only got to know the band after they had been to SA, I would love to see them live, even though they're now without Brad Avery >☹ :'(
Third Day , quite good live and as Matta says, Mac Powell has an excellent voice, although not everyone's cup of tea.

Sean do you do Third Day covers or that style of music?

Ironically I never saw them in SA, only in the USA, LOL.

Yes, we're doing one of their songs, Come together. We're in blues/rock territory ?
