An 8" mid? Usually you would use a 6" for mids in a 3-way speaker. What's the application?

Celestion make a few different 8" ferrite or neodymium models. Local agents are Philtron, Tel: +27 12 322 7060. http://www.philtron.co.za
Hi Alan howzit bru ;D, i got my Vintage 30's from Marshalls about two years ago and then they stopped importing celestions. . . apparently!
I mean as guitarists speakers are just as important as any part of you setup and in this country we get a severely limited selection!

    Aaaaaargh!

Infinity, Eminince beta or kappa speakers, some P.A. speakers.
Imagine only being able to play guitar through sangfong pedals into a P.A. because we can't get amps
or pedals. . . sheesh! I can try import speakers through SIT strings our endorser, but DAMN, It's like buying a fridge from America or something!(price wise)
Have you been able to get proper speakers in the last few years, and if so where?
Distributors change. When I was working at Bothner's they were the Celestion agents. Even back then, I had gone DI, so speakers weren't an issue for me.

To be honest, you only need a few speaker ranges to cover most everything you could ever want: Celestion, EV and Eminence. Eminence doesn't seem to have a local distributor, but I think some of their speakers are available as spares via Fender SA.

I have a December 2006 Celestion price list from ProfAudio and if those prices are anything to go by, they are ridiculously expensive to buy locally. They list the G12M Greenback at R2195, where the US RETAIL price (for a British speaker, remember - so import duties, distributors costs, shipping should bring it in to line with the local price) is $170 (R1360 + 14% VAT = R1550). If you look at street prices, they are $109 (R872 + VAT = R995). Now those local prices are a year out of date and the rand has slipped, so you're probably looking at R2500 - R2995 at the moment. Interestingly, you can buy a Laney cab with four of them in for something like R4K - so I think someone is gouging prices.

But if you speak to a distributor, they will tell you that speakers don't sell. Ummm... Hello?

I'm going to email the new agents and ask them for their prices. Lets see if things have improved with the new distributor.
The new Celestion distributors (Philtron) are not currently carrying the guitar range (I'm speaking to them), so no prices yet.

HOWEVER: The old distributors have some stock left and I can get them relatively cheap. Anyone interested? No Classic 30s, Blues or Golds, but many of the others.
Alan, is there a celestion speaker that's comparitive to the Alnico blues from the AC30?
That is the Celestion Blue. If you've got one of the CC2 AC30s, they use the Vox Blue Marvel, which isn't quite the same. A lot of guys overseas seem to upgrade to the Celestion versions, but they are expensive locally - the last ones I saw were R7.5K ea.

Look at the Blue Dogs from Weber - http://www.tedweber.com/ they do a good version at under $200 (R1600, ex VAT, ex shipping). They also do them in higher power ratings than the originals (which are 15W) - up to 100W.
I've seen the webers on ebay, but I was sceptical.

              I'll check for them again.

One more thing. My friend spoke to a tech at TOMS and he said that he could get my Ashdown to give me similiar clean tones to my AC30 by changing the tubes. Does this sound like solid science ?
Ted Weber has a really good rep amongst the tonehounds. A lot of the boutique amp builders are using his speakers for stock.
he could get my Ashdown to give me similiar clean tones to my AC30 by changing the tubes.
I'm not an amp expert, but everything I know tells me he's wrong and/or speaking out of his nether regions. The Fallen Angel is a high gain design and the AC30 is not. The design of the AC30 is pretty unique in many ways, from the power filtering to the power section. The Ashdown has a solid state rectifier, the AC30 has a tube.
That explains alot. I thought my Ashdown had a nice clean tone until I bought my AC-30.
                    3 months later
Alan, you mention an old celestion distributor. Would they have the greenback? (12" 8ohm).
                    Thanks
                    Tony
Yeah they had five at R1,000 each two months ago. Contact John Peche at ProfAudio: cestATprofaudioDOTcoDOTza

The new agents weren't bothering with guitar speakers when I spoke to them (round about the same time).
