Amp head cabinets?

mattyd

Hi guys

My first post here.
Good ol' Matta told me about this place ?

I was just wondering if anyone knew of someone in and around Cape Town who makes great amp head cabinets?
Custom tolex colours and the like.

I've been playing with the idea of buying one of those Ceriatone heads but the cabinet will cost too much to ship.

Thanks.

Basil Cousins used to do all kinds of cabinets, but I don't know if he's still around. Actually... now I think of it, I think Karel Mars does cabinets for his own amps too - check with him (he's here, so you can PM him) - I'm sure if he doesn't do them himself, he'll know who does. I don't know if you'll get someone to make one for less than Ceriatone can though - even with shipping.

Hey Matt!

Glad you joined us over on the 'dark side', LOL!

As Alan shared, chat to Karel about it. I know he regularly is bringing in his Mojo kits so maybe he can order just an extra cabinet for you on his next order.

I'm with Alan on the fact I doubt that anyone locally will me able to make a cabinet of the same caliber for much cheaper, if cheaper at all. Tollex isn't cheap, and getting a good, solid strong cab isn't cheap either. There are couple oversea US based cab companies that do custom orders, even seen some great guys on Ebay with some KILLER finished/weird tollex etc.

Cheers

Got the figured back from Nik of Ceriatone and it'll be $860 for the completed head with cabinet and then it'll cost $247 for shipping.
That seems like the best option although I'm still looking out for a 2nd hand JCM800 that someone might wanna sell at a decent price.

There's been 2 lately on Gumtree (one was R8000 and the other was R7500 - both with 4X12 cabs).

Do you guys have any clue what the tax and customs will be on that head if I do ship it in?

At last check the amp will ship under the tariff heading of 8518.50.0000 ( ELECTRONICS SOUND AMPLIFIER SET) and at last check that carries a 7.5% duty PLUS 14% VAT, so you are looking at 21.5% of the value of the amp/cab.... not fun eh :-[

MoJo JoJoe wrote The VATed amount will be the price of the head/cab+shipping+handling...can't remember if they charge VAT on the dutied portion also.
Which Ceriatone are you thinking of getting? I love the Overtone Special!

Actually SARS are are NOT SUPPOSED to charge VAT on shipping/handling, only the value of the gear... you need to have a VERY clear manifest from your supplier so that SARS can remove this cost from their analysis.

Mojo do you own a Overtone Specials? What do you think of the Ceriatone's build quality? I've seen the insides and the look fairly good, but not sure what the iron/transformer quality is like.

I suppose Ceriatone could have them wound anywhere? If I were them I would. I am me and I have Karel wind custom trannies because it's cheaper than importing them. Plus I know what I get, he would not be getting into the winding thing if the trannies wouldn't be right.
