Anything that stood out this year?

I found Tenet untenable...heh. Don't tell me to watch it again - I did. Made less sense the 2nd time around. 🀣 I'd rather re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-watch the Dark Knight.

Esquire has a list of 65 of the 'best' movies of 2020. Umm....they're almost all autobiographies, documentariess and 'coming of age' stores. Yeah, it Esquire - so expect intellectual flavoured offering. Hmmppf.

Imdb have a list of all movies released in 2020 and it's more useful. Though Tenet is the most popular, and still has a > 7 * rating which I find inexplicable.

BUT...in that list I did find something watchable. Soul - which is music related too! Pixar movies about a Music teacher at a school who dreams of making it big in the Jazz world. Fun, clever, poignant - good stuff.

The only other things that had me interested weren't movies - Season 2 of The Boys and The Mandalorian were pretty good.

And if you missed it - SpaceX did a bunch of amazing things this year. Crew launches to the ISS, launched and blew up a bunch of test Starship's, Starlink Constellations launches, etc - easily the coolest things I've seen this year!

Didi I miss anything else entertaining?

Its been a bad year for me and watching movies. The only one that piqued my interest is "Sound of metal". It was released in Nov'20. Curiously its about a metal drummer that loses his hearing, and then subsequently starts to lose control of his life. Or, thats what I understand of it anyways. Hasnt been released in RSA yet as far as I can tell.. but I am keeping my beady eye out for it

Notable mentions: Mandalorian,, Queens Gambit, Greenland, The Devil All the Time and Greyhound,

Stumbled on an Israeli True Story Mini Series from last year called Our Boys , I thought that was excellent.

I didn't watch that much in 2020, but enjoyed The Platform. Dark and very grim, but one of those movies that I found myself thinking back to regularly.

Cooool, I'll dig into the suggestions (I have had Queens Gambit qued up for a rainy day since October!) - thanks guys.

In a feeble attempt to find something entertaining I dug into 'rewatch lists here and here - there's a good few that are in both lists. Even found a few that I hadn't seen No country for old men stood out as one I really ought to have seen by now,

Though...neither list has Edge of Tomorrow which I thought was the best popcorn flick I've seen in forever. And I've-rewatched only a few less times than the Dark Knight =D

    guidothepimmp "Sound of metal"

Also thought this was intriguing ala "I't s all gone a bit Pete Tong"?

Nice find, didn't see this one yet - thanks Stud!

Sweet, will give it a whirl - I wonder if it's gonna haunt me like the original Old Boy and Requiem for a Dream - those two were excellent, if very heavy viewing.

hey guys, hi πŸ˜€ nice thread goin'. massive movie fan too, I even fancy myself a bit of a amateur screenwriter πŸ˜„ Really enjoying reading your guys thoughts on the last 12 months. The only release I can say I caught was Bad Boys 3. To be honest I was disappointed and was really expecting more, but I think it could be more of a generational thing, releases get made nowadays with the action sequences/scenes first and the plot afterwards.

So does half of youtube (Screen Rant, Screen Junkies, etc...) πŸ˜„ They really pick apart things - does highlight how much value seeing things on the beeg screen adds. Last one I saw on the beeeeeg screen (Imax) was The Rise of Skywalker - was pretty epic visuals (and sound, the imax has a truly superb sound system).

Wonder Woman 84 was a disappointment. But Cobra Kai season 3 was surprisingly decent - I gave up on the teeny flavoured season 2, but Season 3 has really cool fight cinematography (the fighting is still a bit lame, but the sequencing and camera work was really well done).

Watched! Not bad, Another Tom Hank's WWII biopic. Saving Ryan's Privates it is not. Though the sound design and sound production was excellent - as bad as Tenet's sound was, this was good. Would have liked to seen more of the bad guys - they were almost anonymous - I get that it's a book adaption but I would have bent the rules and added some background on the baddies from material outside the original book?

      Next up, The Platform.

        V8 Next up, The Platform.

Watched! Pretty damn good, even more poignant given the WallStreetBets/Gamestop furball happening a.t.m.

What confused me was how two Netflix movies (Greyhound & The Platform) both get a 7.0 on Imdb, but one was closer to a 6 and other more like a 8...I guess Tom Hanks gets you a +1 and being subtitled -1? πŸ˜…

Are there any movies y'all are looking forward too?

Not gonna lie - I will be watching this...it's the movie equivalent of a 3am at a petrol station, mystery meat boerie roll.

But Kong v Godzilla on the deck of a aircraft carrier? Sign me up! 😍

studmissile Heh, thanks Stud! This did cross my radar, the dudes at Screen Junkies Universe had a feature on it.

Not a huge horror fan, so I do dig stoopid things like The Meg or 2012 (P.s. Greenland was good, thanks!) but when it gets a bit too serious (IT, The Shining) I kinda get freaked.

V8 This is like Aliens meets the MEG. ClichΓ©d but harmless popcorn fun if you're stumped for choice.

Friday is usually popcorn movie night - is que'ed up, thanks!

Trawling for something interesting I stumbled upon Exit - German language, subtitled. Decent idea, digitizing consciousness. Acting is a collection of good and so-so (The 'bad' guy was rather unconvincing), Production and design was good. Script needed a leeeeetle bit more work.

RIght-o, not sure anyone is still trawling this thread but a few more to share

Sweet Home Korean 'Zombie Apocalypse' series on Netflix - don't be put off by the Zombie thing, it's quite cleverly & well done. Two thumbs up,

Space Sweepers, Imdb score a little generous - Another Korean Netflix offering, this time a movie. 5th Element meets Elysium, but it's a bit slow, needs some tighter editting. But amazing CGI for the budget. Gets a thumbs up for a great CGI sequence with the robot lead character.

There's some interesting Scifi movies/series coming up :

              ,,,erm...Sky Sharks!

Wellll, it is 2021but I thought a little update might help you find something watchable?

Free Guy was entertaining - enjoyed. But don't watch the trailer first, they put all the good bits in there.

The Suicide Squad was also really enjoyable - again DO NOT watch the trailers, almost all the best bits are in there. Boo!

Squid Game Korean series on Netflix, subtitled. Hints of the Platform, but not quite as dark. I really dug it.

Yellowstone Series, Dallas meets Soprano's. Didn't expect to enjoy this, but I reaaaaaaly did. Surprisingly good, with some great actors.

Foundation has just started - not got into it yet, but visuals look excellent. I'm a Asimov fan and have read the books, so I'm, hopeful for this.

Watchmen : The Motion Comic, Easily the best thing I've seen in ages. I was a huge fan of the graphic novel - slightly disappointed by the movie but totally blown away by this 'motion comic'. I hardly ever hand out 10/10, but this gets the full spinal tap 11/10.

Oh and no Snyder cut silliness here (Yeah, I did watch it). Rather spend the time on the Watchmen Motion Comic, which is also -imho- Snyder's best work!
