  • [Paul Davids] How to record solo acoustic guitar

A useful overview of the process, beginner friendly too - yet manages to cover pretty much everything you'd want to know.

Goto 12:20 for his 'Big Secret' - Which is splitting and panning reverbs to add depth/size (make it sound huge) - it's a interesting trick!

This was my attempt on acoustic for the previous comp. As you probably know.

Only problem is I don't have a mic to record acoustics. Also I need to work on getting the tracks synced which I've learned how to do now in Reaper.

Easily solved...!

One thing I noticed now, that I didn't note before - there's a LOT of plectrum noise - likely part of your style with the rapid strumming - but it's quite noticeable.

If you didn't use a mic on this track - the natural brightness of the piezo is likely accentuating it?

Happily, the guitars don't get quacky or boxy like piezo's usually do ?

That is so cool I am definitely going to try this

What I to create a wide sound is
1. record the channel (mic or pickup)
2. duplicate the track
3. set first track to left, way left or say 9 o'clock on the dial
4. Set the second track way right or at 3 o'clock. This track you need to nudge slightly later. I am using Reaper so I click on the track element and press N to nudge, and start moving it 5ms at a time. (if you zoom in the start of the element you can see it shifting to the right in tiny steps) I have found a sweet spot of 15ms. In other words the right channel plays 15ms later than the left. It's quite magical, suddenly the stereo effect steps in

If I have two guitars I can set the one pair to way left and middle and the other to way right and middle. Imagine the center point between to two dials and that's where the guitar will be with a nice stereo sound.

I also notice a lot of plectrum noise when using a mic . I recon it would work better for fingerstyle.

V8 the plectrum noise is insane. Specially when you track the acoustic a couple of times. Partly it is also the mic that is the issue because it is an omni mic I used and I can't focus it on just a certain area. Might also help if I use a softer pick or change the way I strum. And then also some EQ to cut out some frequencies.

I'm thinking, maybe, just maybe you could use a compressor with a fast attack, to reduce that click, or even an EQ with a notch filter because the plectrum click is at the same frequency everytime. I'll experiment this afternoon and let you know.
