Thanks to @klaasvakie svakie winning the super challenge, we've our fourth challenge of 2019...and well done to klaasvakie for being real quick on getting the next topic out - double win!

The Guitar Talk Sample Challenge!

The theme is month is to Sample Something - another topic reallllllly open to creative interpretation...?

The Sample Something Challenge:
Do what you want, but include audio from somewhere else. This can be another song, old sci-fi a la Rob Zombie, a poem being recited etc.
If you don't want to include the audio directly you can play/perform/recite it, as long as it is recognizable.

? Entries Close: Sunday, 7th July, 23:59PM

?Rules: Only one rule, no more than three (3) minutes in length. The rest I'm going to leave it open to interpretation - again, because of the topic, we're gonna have covers - try and make it your own somehow - and bear in mind we are a guitar fopum, so guitar-y entries will likely get more votes than - say- a trance tune!

To encourage more peeps - we'll potentially have two voting groups - One for Home Studio recordings (mutl tracked, etc...) and the other for field recordings (Cellphone recordings or other handheld device).

And yes, vocals are welcome!

Collaborations are strongly encouraged, either with a fellow GuitarTalk member or friends/family/etc...

⁉How To Enter: Record your entry, sign up or log in to SoundCloud, post it there. Then grab the SoundCloud link and reply here with the link pasted in your reply.

?Prizes: The fame and glory of winning a GuitarTalk Challlenge. And the increasingly dubious distinction of choosing the next challenge.

Anyone can enter this competition. You just need a guitar and a phone. But any other recording equipment is fine too.

V8 changed the title to The Guitar Talk - "Sample Something" Challenge!.

More challenging than I thought. I have two projects in the scrap bin. Start all over again....sigh*

Stoffeltoo I have two projects in the scrap bin. Start all over again....sigh*

As a plan B - I'm digging through my previous entries for something to sample - I found something that amused me, so at least I have a fall back if inspiration doesn't strike!

If you are stuck, here's some sampling idea's

      1. Sample a sound (e.g. Kick drum hit) and use it in a sequencer as percussion. I heard a tune by Sabaton that used a gun shot as a snare and a bomb explosion as a kick drum...I kid you not!

      2. Can't sing? Do what I do, get a vocal from somewhere. James Brown, Bruce Lee, Darth Vader and Christopher Walken have all 'contributed' to my past creations...?

      3. Sample a loop of a song you dig (bass loops are a great place to start) and work off that. Usually easier to find stems (e'g' raw tracks of each instrument) than extracting something for a song.

      4. Work with stems - sometimes artists release stems for peeps to remix.

Here's a list of albums/songs that officially shipped with stems (Dream Theatre, NIN et al), not a long list though

Here's a list of 5 places to find stems - again not a huge list but it's a start!

And finally, a perhaps not official site with a lot of stems...

      Happy sampling peeps!

Thanks Meron. I didnt know stems was a thing ?

guidothepimmp Thanks Meron. I didnt know stems was a thing

Anytime, thought the term 'sample' is fairly wide - I've dipped but a toe in the sampling waters in my time though - sure there's far more to be discovered!

Getting stems makes things SOOOO much easier to grab a sweet loop.

I had a great idea yesterday. Placed the sample(s) in sequence and added one or two thingies, and then tried to record guitar - epic fail. ?

The recording quality sucks big time. I haven't recorded in so long I think I forgot how :face_with_rolling_eyes:

I have to try and get it done this weekend as I am on the road the entire week before the due date. Holding thumbs.

@V8 Hello! The sample of System Of A Down's "Chop Suey!" - used in my contest entry - got picked up by SoundCloud's copyright centre. Just flagging this as a potential issue for other entrants.

daveo1977 Hmm, that's interesting! Wouldn't have thought SC would have been as strict as YT, but it makes sense they'd have something in place.

We'll cross that bridge should it cause any issues with entries - perhaps even host them local (for this challenge).

                Very surprising,

                Soundcloud isn't easily monitized.

Maybe try pitch shifting the whole project a semitone or two (if it sounds decent) before publishing? I've seen a few you-tubers do it to bs the system.

thats a good idea, definitely worth a try. knew Youtube had become pretty hardcore copyright Nazi's but was'nt also aware of Soundcloud.

makes sense though... these record labels are very quick to sue.. place like sound-cloud or YouTube just don't want to be tied up all day in litigation

Juuussst in case you arn't on the GT whatsapp group - there's rumours of (at least) two entries in the works for this one - how's y'all doing?

V8 Is there any chance of hosting contest entries locally? My mash up is on appeal at Soundcloud, and I won't be able to enter otherwise.

Yup +1. I also cannot seem to shift the pitch of the track.

daveo1977 Let's ask @NorioDS - Norio, any chance of hosting locally as we did way back?

If not, we could always use box.com as we did before we hosted locally.

V8 sorry guys I'm stuck in hospital again. Can't help with the hosting. Will have to be Box or something like that.
