The GuitarTalk Folk Music Challenge!
Shit, I need to write a song
Looks like I'll be missing this one. Between losing my voice and my audio interface giving up the ghost I've been out of action for the last couple of weeks and now I have house guests who will be around for the rest of the weekend. :/
- Edited
No worries gents. I've a verse and a chorus and both suck - very doubtful I'll record anything for this. Folk is definitely not me thing.
Anyone wanting a extension - Thinking Tuesday 16th.? Not sure that helps with Easter next weekend though?
Well I think I've managed to scrape something together. It isn't what I was originally planning but I think it will work. Hoping to get a couple of hours tomorrow night to do some refining before I post. :-)
Extend this till Sunday, and I'll join you
Let's just say enter whenever - there's no time limit on this one - whatever you got, whenever ya got it!
We'll change the voting phase to an appreciation phase?
So I just had a listen to what I did last night and the vocals are... Ummm... Let's avoid the expletives and say 'not great'. I could do with a couple extra days too.
Finally got my track finished.
My original plan was to do a hard rock/metalish version of Rantin Rovin Robin (Robert Burns) but after spending a couple of days with it I couldn't really get it going so fell back on another track I've been toying with. Although the song itself isn't particularly folky, Simon and Garfunkel are solid folk rock so I'm claiming it. ?
The vocals took three attempts to get them to a point that I'm happy with, which is why it is so late.
This is also my first attempt to record something a little higher gain... I'm broadly happy with the result but it didn't turn out quite how I had invisage, still got some learning to do.
studmissile really like this one! Particularly enjoy the subtle variations that keep it interesting and the harmonica was a particular highlight. If I have a criticism it’s that the vocals aren’t as prominent as they deserve to be. Definitely my favorite or your tracks that I’ve heard.
Yeti Thanks, yeti. Great track, loved the heavy metal execution. Effectively arranged.

Great execution! Not much crit's to add (aside that disturbed did it first ?), really nicely done ?
Yeti articularly enjoy the subtle variations that keep it interesting
Hear, hear - me too - has a certain polish to it. The vocals did become clearer as the track progressed - Stud has a vocal style that almost hides behind the song...but it's developing nicely over the years :double thumbsup: I'm favouring the smoothness of the acoustic guitars in @studmissile's track out of the two.
Well done to ya both - folk kicked my ass ?
V8 disturbed did it first ?
False. ?
Although the vocals (and the band) are really more "Goth" than metal, methinks the song ended up with a more metal vibe than Goth.
I first heard this when I was a teenager. (So about 20 years ago?) Local band, believe it or not. And their other music is good too. AFAIK, they're in Canada now.
So my suggested themes haven't proved massively popular in the past and suggesting one at all is a little cheeky since the only opinion expressed this month went against me... but I had a couple of thoughts for future themes:
Super Cheesy - Something so generic or overplayed that you normally wouldn't be caught dead trying.
Super Ambitious - Something so advanced or iconic that you normally wouldn't be caught dead trying.
Thoughts?
studmissile Nice one Stud! Clean, simple and beautifully produced
