Tuckstir Neck generally looks and feels great

man, that headstock looks coooool! The 80's certainly had some interesting designs, but that's restrained in a way I can relate to.

Good idea to source a new floyd, finding that part would be frustrating (and likely) end up being as pricey as a new unit.

V8. Yeah had a look on raru.. I can buy a saddle for it.. But it's not exactly the same.. So if it did I would have to buy 6.. And then I've basically bought a new Floyd. Also I believe (hopefully) the new Floyd's have a press insert and not a self tap screw for the bridge pins. Which means the body fixing becomes slightly easier..

Are you looking at repurposing that body? Or would you be keen on doing a new body with solid lumber? I have some nice walnut blanks for a body. They are either 3 or 3.5 cm thick though. They were cut to glue a top on.
I also have a german original floyd i could let go for cheap ish if it makes any difference.

For now the plan is to re-purpose the body..for now.. Will keep in mind your offer but would need a top to bulk up the thickness.. unless I changed to a fixed bridge .....A walnut custom body with a flame maple top does like sound a good plan..mhmmm maybe make a semi-hollow body..

oh the possibilities..

oh.. lets talk.. as it stands I will be going with a Floyd so I am looking for one, and will be budgeting for on at the end of the month.

Cool man.. drop me a pm.

Curiously.. i have a walnut blank with flame maple top.. but im using it for a replacement body for my beat to hell charvel cx. The walnut i bought ended up making 4 blanks so i have some extras.. just dont have anymore maple unfortunately

      6 days later

So I have started the long slow process of sanding.
getting through the first coat was a process on its own.. and through all the primer layers.

      juat the sides left..
the grain of the wood is quite nice.. but it is plywood..might do something with it..

Tuckstir ..might do something with it..

Walnut replacement body, really like the sound of that!

V8 Walnut replacement body, really like the sound of that!

I hear you and agree walnut body would be nice.. but not for this round... but maybe for a later project... its still an option. (In-fact I already have a fairly good idea what I would do with a blank piece of wood. So watch this space.)
But I was referring to the Plywood body.. working with the actual plywood and making it a feature...its One of the options ..
a Few of My options I'm considering..
Doing a stain, maybe even a burst of some sort, either highlighting the edge grain or blacking it out.
Doing a spray paint, like pearl white and overlaying pop-art graphics.
Doing something like Steampunky..( was my original Idea) like adding in a wiring diagram on the pick-guard cover and adding gears. etc.
      Doing A anime/comic graphic guitar.
Doing a Van Halen frankenstrate tribute ( Prefer to do something originally my own)
doing a fabric covered guitar or doing a holoflash guitar

or a combination of one or more...Ideas..My biggest issue at them moment is not a lack of ideas.. but of too many Ideas. and hoping that once the paint is all off, I'll have a better idea of where to go.

Ahhh, I like it! A true DIY challenge, I had a similar experience with a 70's bass - all laminated plywood, made the edge layers a feature - was quite pleased with how it came out retro.

Hmm, all of your options sound good! Pearl white with a black headstock would look pimp...Or even a Knight Rider tribute....anything but the frankenstrat, everytime I see the EVH replica at the gear junkie I cringe ?

        5 days later

so today's effort was to tackle the sides. i still have the horns to finish off

this now really shows off the Ply.. and the more i look at it.. the more i think i'm going to use it to is fullness.

so my next order of business once the body is sanded down complete. is to start on the neck.
it has a large chip.. which is going to need a slight modification to the shape.

on other news.. we have a duel..
@wern101 and myself are going to have a shoot off to see who can do the best looking guitar. based on looks only..
once we are done.. we will have a vote off.

Looking at it properly.. i quite like the look of the ply too. Looking good

Yes! I really dig the look of those layers - thats 'proper' ply - can't wait to see what you get up to

Great idea @Tuckstir & @wern101 - I'm fully stocked up on popcorn, let's the games begin!

Tuckstir the more i think i'm going to use it to is fullness.

Yes! Do it! The layers really look cool. I think you can go all kinds of creative with that!

Tuckstir on other news.. we have a duel..

Yes Indeed. But I don't see myself finishing very soon. This may only be in 2019...

wern101 But I don't see myself finishing very soon. This may only be in 2019...

Oh...you might be missing the point of a duel ? it's actually to struggle to the finish. Besides by 2019 tedibear would have made 4 and re-done the finish on all of them - at least once ?

V8 Besides by 2019 tedibear would have made 4 and re-done the finish on all of them - at least once ?

Hahaha. Yes I hear that! The man does love the build.
I fear the little bug is biting me hard! My budget will not approve...or maybe its time to adjust the budget...who needs toiletries anyway.

Don't worry my budget for this build has been received a bump in the road and has been set back a month ;(
so its going to take me awhile too. just remember you can do a lot with a small budget. just need to be creative.. and spending a lot of money, unless you intend to upgrade your hardware in the process..

V8 Oh...you might be missing the point of a duel ? it's actually to struggle to the finish. Besides by 2019 tedibear would have made 4 and re-done the finish on all of them - at least once ?

yeah I do.. I make better guitars than I can Play..its fun.. and the planing going in. the research, and getting my creative juices flowing.. its a better drug than what got the green light in Concourt today.

so with no wood to test the concept i have for this build.. we go directly to the source material..

this is just a "test"ust to guage how it will come out..
time and patients i think is going to be the name of the game..
I have 25 layers of ply to make distinct.

Thats a lot of work right there.. hats off to you.. that will look awesome on the back at the belly carve

guidothepimmp Thats a lot of work right there.. hats off to you.. that will look awesome on the back at the belly carve
the more I worked on it.. the less i liked it.. so out came the sander..
was liking the green and yellow.. so stuck with them.
I have applied my first layer of sealant.
