Music improves brain health and function in many ways. It makes you smarter, happier and more productive at any age. Listening is good, playing is even better.

Participants were assessed on several markers of mental health including depression, anxiety and neuroticism, and reported the ways they most often listened to music to regulate their emotions. Analysis showed that anxiety and neuroticism were higher in participants who tended to listen to sad or aggressive music to express negative feelings, particularly in males. My wife and the kids are currently exploring a book about the concepts of drawing and art. The writer of said book said (and i am paraphrasing) 'If you experience a difficult emotion, then go and look for a song that exaggerates that emotion. This will help you deal with it and get over it' (or something along those lines)

I think that 'sci-ency' statement may be a bit of a sweeping one. I do actually feel tension release when I listen to specific genres. If I am angry, I listen to angry music, and it really helps!

But, who am i to argue with the science dudes... ?

Totally agree...
nothing like listening to some loud angry music to expel your emotions.. but needs to be loud, you need to sing along and feel the song..

My current go to song for release

Tuckstir Indeed. I listened to a Boss Katana 50 Amp review the other night and this guy plays a little riff that almost had me in tears, I kid you not! I haven't heard anything so amazing in years. May only be just me, but I was knocked off my feet. Serious power in music.

Here is the vid - check out what he plays from 07:53 - GASP!

It can be (and should be?) cathartic...but I like to balance out the debate with pro's and con's. I think of music as tool - and how ya choose to use it, that's the fun part.

At a jam/braai It's always interesting to me to observe the change a flamenco jam vs a blues jam vs a funk jam changes the mood/vibe of the gathering.
