  • the 2018 prs se range. opinions?

i've never really taken the se range seriously. it's not that i'm a headstock snob. it's just that i'd rather spend my money on a good, second hand prs than a new se for some reason. for 2018, however, it looks like prs has stepped up their game on the se range, and they look scrumptious.

i have my eyes very seriously on the santana standard. shorter scale length, lovely colour, i'll be extremely interested to see what price they come in at in south africa, considering they're looking at the sub-$500 in the u.s.

if anyone's interested, here's the link: http://www.prsguitars.com/products/se/

@domhatch this the one you like?

I gotta say, the plain standard really does it for me!

And the headstock is sufficiently pointy for me to overlook it not being an Ibanez ?

Raru.co.za have some PRS SEs, I think they're the 2018 model? (Release date Sept 2017). That Santana Standard in cherry is very nice!

@NorioDS yup, that's the one. while i really love the finish on the standard, the double cutaway on the santana is what sways the scales firmly in its direction. in addition, i currently have two les pauls, and i'm looking for something lighter, and something to be a 'replacement' for my original two prs guitars - a standard 22 and a custom 22.

i hope these things come in at a reasonable price

Four4 hey, thanks. interesting pricing - just under r8k. about what i would expect to pay. now, all i have to do is sell my sg!

domhatch the double cutaway on the santana is what sways the scales firmly in its direction

I'm ashamed to say I didn't even notice that! doh Yeah I'd probably be more comfortable playing on the double cutaway than single, too.

NorioDS it's all good. trust me, i've been on the prs bandwagon for many a year...!

        2 months later

so i've done a little more looking into this range. and i think i may be stuck between the custom 22, the spalted maple (and the zebrawood for that matter!) custom 24 (just gorgeous! but the first time i will be playing a 24-fretter, more on that in a bit), and then the santana. so:

        • on the santana, the neck profile is wide-fat, as is was on my two previous PRSs, which i enjoyed. this model is also a 22-fretter
        • on the custom 22 and the custom 24s, it's wide-thin. a consideration, as is the 24-fret issue on, well, the custom 24

        so, a question:
        - i've pretty much played 22-fret electric guitars all my life. what to expect from 24-fretters? what's the difference?

        appreciate
