Guitar Talk Theme challenge Vote
wern101 On the point of what to base votes on... Everyone is of course free to vote as they see fit, but I think that it is only fair that "spec-fidelity" (to what extent the entry is within spec) should enjoy a high degree of consideration and influence on how we vote.
Stoffeltoo Thanks for clarifying!
Jazzman105 Agreed! Spec-Fidelity? Did you just make that up? ? ?
wern101 Yes. LOL
1 more day to go for voting peeps.
Finally voted - not easy!
If I stuck my producer hat on : I dug stud's track and Wern's track. In a ideal world, I'd declare them both winners and mix Wern's voice-over with Stud's track - reckon that's a great representation of the fine peeps here at GuitarTalk ?
Jazzman105 but I think that it is only fair that "spec-fidelity" (to what extent the entry is within spec) should enjoy a high degree of consideration and influence on how we vote.
"Spec-fidelity" - he-he, like that! We do tend to bend the 'rules' around here a fair bit, sigh...head shaking...ya'know guitarists ?
Voting done. Phew.
Since I couldn't vote for myself (duh) or for Meron's track on which I was named a collaborator, I was left with three choices, which didn't make voting easier. ?
I'll comment on the individual tracks later.
V8 If @studmissile is keen I'm all for it! Will be sweet!
wern101 I was seriously set on voting for my own entry. Am i misunderstanding the rules, is it considered in poor taste? ?
Jazzman105 meant no disrespect! I guess its always been a 'rule'? Not really published or anything.
Stoffeltoo, could you clarify?
Jazzman105 It's been done before (I've done it once myself!), some might say it's in poor taste...but I think if you feel it's the track you like the most, then vote for it.
wern101 No offense taken. ?
Voting is a choice. If you believe your track outshines the competition. Why not. Unfortunately this vote is not anonamous and if your choice is for your own song, do it.
I believe that it should measure up to your criteria such as suitability and intent of the compo which disqualifies my entry immediately. My choice has been made between the remainder.
Happy voting...
Thanks for the replies guys. I shall vote with my conscience then ?

Damn it, I thought the challenge was hard, but the voting is even worse! Thanks for the votes V8 and offer Wern101, but the truth is: I was (still am) disappointed with my entry, My slide work is far from polished and feel the snazzy new Guitar Talk website design really deserves better...
As for the other entries, great guitar work all around but just not quite as upbeat as I was expecting/hoping? Secondly I can respect Jazzman105s comments regarding Spec-Fidelity, but personally also felt the 4 mins was a little too long for this challenge. So in the end I'm going to go Wern101 as I could see that working as a promotional theme. But really it was a tough choice.
P.S Apologies for late reply the summer rains are wrecking havoc with my wifi/dsl. and I wanted to give the tracks another listen through some decent speakers with rested ears.
I was disappointed with the number of entries but not the quality.
I have heard each one of the participants grow through their entries which is testament to the dedication as a guitarist/song writer.
I hope to promote another challenge soon with something more generic and worth exploring for the forumites.
Well it is official then.
Congratulations Wern101!
A great promotional indeed and well presented.
Hey guys.
Thank you so very much. I am overwhelmed.
I must admit that it feels like an empty win. Bitter-sweet. The other tracks are waay better than mine. I also agree with studmissile that Guitar Talk deserves an EPIC track
I am also disappointed that we did not have more entries and, on that note, more voters. ? From what I saw only 9 votes? And that includes the participants! Very sad for me.
I'd be happy to make the track available to Guitar Talk as per comp rules, but would be more inclined to redo it, with a proper backtrack! Maybe a mix up of all the entries? I think that a number of Genres/styles are represented. Open to any collaborations or ideas.
Specific track feedback (based on nothing else than my own opinion):
@V8 - You gots the funk! (How do you do that?) Really dug the track, although the vocals were a bit soft and had to listen a few times to find out what you said.
@Stoffeltoo - had to smile when listening to those lyrics. Loved it again. So true! Enjoyed the melody!
@studmissile – Hooks galore and with your unique sound, fantastic! I don’t think there is anything wrong with your slide work. To my ears it is a sweet symphony!
@Jazzman105 – Your track is so smooth and crisp. Really enjoyed it. Great leadwork that tells a story. I personally miss the rhythm guitars though, IMO I think it would have made for a ‘fuller’ sound? What setting(s) did you use for the lead?
As for my own track - I had so much more planned. I think the vocals are a bit on the flat side, but with limited recording gear we gotta work with the tools we have...
Now for the X-mas compo….*jingle jingle jingle...
Thanks again!
Stoffeltoo Congratulations Wern101!

Absolutely! Well done Wern - such a great idea the voice-over you did, loved it!
studmissile Secondly I can respect Jazzman105s comments regarding Spec-Fidelity, but personally also felt the 4 mins was a little too long for this challenge.
It's a tough one, thought that around 1-2mins was a good length for a promo style track. I'm still of the idea that marrying two tracks would be cool, I was tempted to remix all of them, into one manic GT mash-up - but I'm rather lazy...

Cool man, can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve!

wern101 Just highlight the text you want to quote and a black box will pop up somewhere below the highlighting saying "quote" - click on that back and the text quoted will pop up in the reply window - something I'm loving about this new software!
My laziness would have to be lifted - a mashup would be cool though, would want your vocal stems and then I'd chop some riffage out of each track and then try and lego it together into something that made sense...
Didn't buy any gear
Digging what I got
that's only 'coz there
were ques on Takealot
Raru was working and up
Specials there were galore
Alas, nothing for this pup
All shopping was a bore

Thanks Wern! Since you asked...(and nobody is really interested :p) :
1 track of Bass : P-style Hofner bass w/Zoom B2 into interface. A evolution of the funky a$$ patch I've been working on for a while now. A combo of auto-wah, drive, compressor and octaver - it's syrup-y bass goodness - Kinda synth-y when you hold notes and percussive if playing staccato.
1 track of Guitar : Strat (pos 4, neck + bridge) into Wizards buffer/drive pedal (used a hint of gain) straight into interface. Did add a amp sim (Lepou 456) and a cab sim (Eden Bass cab 4x10)
1 track of Drums : Addictive drums.
A 'vocal' track using a really crappy old Carol mic I had lying around.
No quantizing or studio trickery on any tracks either ? - just played as heard. P.s. I'm no singer/rapper - but I couldn't find anyone else!
