Simple answer, almost all are sponsored in one way or another?

Was recently looking for a decent review of the Hotone Xstomp to share here, but I couldn't find one that was unbiased or a fluff piece. Perhaps it's just me, or that it's a pre-release product that a 'normal' person hasn't yet gotten their hands on yet - but everyone is singing it's praises, with zero negativity (that I could find).

Can it be that good? It's possible, though every review I saw was a product demo, hotone sent them a pedal and asked for them to review it.

In that scenario would you risk being honest and be excluded from future free products? It's like all the SA car magazines, no real reviews as they'd be excluded from the next product launch (and free lunch >☹).

Bah, we really need a old-skool Clarkson in the guitar world. I think Anderton's are more transparent about the inherent bias, but still it's a product demo, not a real world, "player like you" review.

Are there any brutally honest gear reviewers out there?
+1 for Anderton's when it comes to relatively unbiased corporate reviews.

I also find Amazon reviews to be a generally good source for reviews- it's easy to witle out the obviously biased ones and get a good feel for a product, but you don't get demos there obviously

I've watched MANY hours of the captain and chappers... Although I was a little uneasy/ticked off/confused/questioning when Rob Chapman die the "Kemper saves chappers" two part video... Where basically it came down to "I'm going to use Kemper to tour because it's smaller/easier than an amp" but then later I saw postings on his FB of his gig rig... with amps again.

I still watch their stuff... but it makes me feel they are also "fluffers" a bit. lol.

I may have misunderstood the "Can Kemper Save Chappers?" stuff though.

+1 for Amazon. Agree, between the amazon user reviews, tdpri and talkbass I find more useful info than 98% on youtube. Certainly a niche for a unbiased reviewer out in youtube land though.

Me too, dig the captain and rabea....though Chappers irritates me more and more. Chappers has that..."it's new and shiny and I love it" G.A.S sickness, that I've grown out of.

But I may just be a lot jelly. He is definitely having a great time with companies throwing gear at him to review. Whatdda life! ?

Eirik plays through the different features of pedals, and generally doesn't give an opinion.

I also enjoy enjoy the candour over at CS Guitars: https://www.youtube.com/user/0cscott

I also go to Evert Zeevalkink's channel for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/user/Evertzeevalkink/featured
Thanks for that Dave - of the three I dug CSGuitars - he's got real world questions and answers that got me learning something from most of what I watched on his channel. A bit of a shreddy smurf (Dorje fan :?), so the opinion is slanted towards a higher gain sound -but loads of good info there for anyone.

THe tube screamer one piqued my interest - preferred it to Chapper's TS comparison.

Golly, Evert does the looping thang like a Boss!
