  • Rescued instruments - my weakness!

Both my animals (rip - sniff) were rescues and the instruments I play the most are rescues too! I smell a theme... I've a soft spot for abused instruments - dunno why, but shiny, new things arn't as nearly appealing as a beat-up 'treasure' that needs some tlc. I particularly enjoy the ones with a story and hopefully some mojo. It's a sickness. Or a blessing. Terada Nylon : Sounds real good in DADGAD. Beefy, but not boom-y. And it's sooooo beat-up you'll take it anywhere. http://www.guitarforum.co.za/your-gear/obgd-terada-nylon/ MIJ Fender Strat : My favourite electric - ever. And it was a complete doggo when I got it - blame the bassist owner that had it before me :P. Re-fretted, re-wired and tweaked, tweaked, tweaked until I knew enough about strats to stop messing with a great guitar. Hofner Bass : This one is a gift that keeps on giving. More mojo than Austin Powers. Everytime I get G.A.S(sy) I go play-test against something (last was 66 Pbass) and I always prefer the hofner. There's a honest simplicity and inspiring feel to this one. As simple as it is, I keep on finding cool sounds and grooves. Still got a few things I want to do to it, since I'm keeping it, time to get cracking on Part II of it's journey. http://www.guitarforum.co.za/setup-mods-and-repair/hofner-bass-restoration-questions!/ What have you rescued? C'mon share your story & pics.
Great topic! I love my gear to be pre-loved as well. Shitty picture but it's what I have right now. From left to right... 1. Sexy-ass Ibanez Roadstar bass. Bought second-hand from Jack Flash Jr on here. And was once gigged by the Mango Groove bassist. It's in the JD Kustom shop for some TLC. (I'm *NOT* a DIY guy.) 2. Sexy-ass Ibanez JS100. Bought second-hand from Andrew Bryson on here. Sexy guitar. Sounds great. Also at JD for some setup love. Oh the neck on this thing is so much nicer than my other Ibanez. Chunkier I guess. 3. Ibanez RG42DX. Bought second-hand from Francis Viviers on here. Very nice guitar but I think it could do with a setup, slightly lower action and maybe new pups. I'll probably sell it though. 4. Ibanez (spot the pattern?) something or the other. I bought this almost-new from someone on here too. But I bought it for the look of it. So hardly play it. It has sweet pups in it so a setup might "fix" this one for me. Probably gonna sell it though. 5. Yamaha G-55A classical. My second guitar ever. Also bought second-hand. Quite beat up but sounds good and fun to have right behind me at work for a quick pluck. Won't ever sell it. 6. Yamaha steel string (not pictured). My first guitar ever. Also second-hand. Boomy but the action is harsh and I never play it. Might fix it and will never sell it. 7. Starfire something or the other (not pictured). Also second-hand. My first electric guitar bought for me by—get this—my then-girlfriend and now-wife. What an angel, right? Piece of shit guitar though and Alan Ratcliffe said it's not worth fixing. So I'm keeping it for the "feels" value. Got it with a Starfire amp and ditched that thing FAST. Even worse than the guitar :P 8. Ibanez RG470 (not pictured). VERY purple with luminescent knobs. Hated the look of it but loved how it played. Sold it when I needed money and regretted it ever since. So yeah, not a new guitar in sight. I've also bought some pre-loved pedals and amps but those stories didn't end up so well. So I'm thinking of making it a rule to get new or close-to-new on the electronics while second-hand is fine for the guitars. SUPER proud of the Roadstar bass and the JS 100. You must understand, I've wanted a JS for 10 years or something :P Since I started this forum or maybe just a bit later. If I do buy new, it'll likely be the new(ish) JS24 (in muscle car purple, of course).
1968 Hofner 12 string. Removed the faulty pots and have the bridge pick up going straight to the jack. Will have to play through a di box. Fitted a little support under the bridge to try and correct the belly bulge. Fitted strings and using it while I ponder the next move. The plane was to tune it to open C for a specific song but still not happy with the action. Might fit a G-Tone pick up system and light gauge strings but don't see it being used on stage as such just yet :(
All my current gear (and my ginger cat ? ) are either second hand or pawnshop rescues, so I share the affinity for rescues.

This was a pawnshop find at cash converters about 10 years ago.

Korean Squier II P-Bass. Body was sanded down. Squier logo was removed and the pots were scratchy but it had killer tone and that unmistakable mid range hump and growl, typical of a P-Bass. Refinished it in black n maple
