  • Cape Town Metal Gig - 6 May @ ROAR

If you a bored on Saturday and need to warm up a bit...With Dawn are having a EP launch with Alinea & Pyjama Planet supporting. R40 entrance (or R50 and get a With Dawn CD). Bands kick off from 21h30. https://www.facebook.com/events/1308339765927463/ Should be a laugh, all really cool guys & it's Alinea's debut (I'm on bass) ::)
    Good luck, looks like fun!
      Thanks Guys,

There's a good chance of some decent video - two bands playing have professional videographers as members. Not sure how well the sound will come out, them lowwww frequencies the 7 & 8 strings put out from their low-low e strings might not play nicely with the video mics ?
Funny you should mention that... Of all the devices that were used by audience members at our last gig, the best of the bunch ended up being my wife's Huawei P9 Lite. It has dual stereo microphones and it handled the audio well enough to hear all the instruments and vocals. Amazing quality considering that there were some fancy 4k video cameras and high end iPhones that couldn't handle the high volume. ?

Heh, I know! The guitarists Zoom H2 can't handle the volume in the practice room. The Iphone 6/7 (usually quite good) also suffers, my Samsung isn't any better either. My mates P9 Lite is probably the best I've heard from a phone, better than most handheld devices - it IS that impressive. I seldom replace phones, but the next phone is probably a P9 Lite.

THough a SM57 is still the daddy...so to speak.

But I hear that there's a possibility of the DI's from the mixing desk being multi-tracked tonite. Which would be very, very cool - my favourite thing is a live recording!

            Good luck and enjoy!

              Heya Hasie,

Umm, on stage - not my best performance. But off stage the crowd dug what we was doing (nobody had heard any of the tunes before).

We played a lot faster than rehearsal, so I struggled big time (I should have warmed up - tsk-tsk), both guitarist(s) rig's were playing up, causing volume drops/swells during the tunes and the drummer lost a stick during one of the tunes and then got blasted by the monitors causing one of his ears to start bleeding ???. Our singer was amazing though!

When I get to see some video, I'll probably feel a bit better about it - currently I'm thinking it's good to get the worst gig out of the way ?

Legit bleeding?! I always joke about that when someone mucks with the in ear mix and you get blasted. Is he going to be ok?
Glad the gig was "ok from the crowds perspective". It's weird how sometimes you can feel like it is "falling apart a bit" but the audience perceives it as good.

The good thing about having all original songs is that people have no idea how it's supposed to sound, at first. ? And it always happens that the songs speed up when performing live, I think drummers should drink chamomile tea and have rescue drops before a show so that the adrenaline doesn't boost up the BPM ?

Damn, ear bleeds are not cool dude, hope he doesn't suffer any permanent damage. Organizers these days don't seem to care about their performers at all, hope he sends them his doctor's bill....

I'm sure you guys knocked it out of the park and I can't wait to see some video!!!

Yip, real blood - a trickle to be fair, but blood none-the-less. AFAIK, that's a potential sign of permanent damage. He said his hearing was a bit muffled the next day - *sigh* drummers.

I have offered to arrange thunderplugs for everyone in the band, but nobody took me up on the offer. I'm gonna get me a legit set of protect-a-ear custom plugs, the set I have is okay (vater) - but after seeing this, I think R700 on the best plugs I can source locally is cheap.

Honestly - I was terrible, but the video will give me a idea of how bad. As a band, we couldn't have been that bad, already got a invite to play in June (we're gonna pass to get some recording done). Think the next gig will be in late spring...for the album launch ?

+100 :roflmao: You've been there, you've done that!

When the drummers stick went flying past the singer and he dropped out for 4 bars, my mate reckoned it was the best drop he'd every heard in a metal song. And that we should definitely play the song like that from now on... :?

Rescue drops and camomile tea...actually I think that's a GREAT idea. I have noticed that we speed up a bit during a set, was trying to figure out who is the guilty party - but I'm the last to point fingers, my timing is poor on a good day.

EDIT :: The sound issue that causing sily drummer to have a trickle bleed out his ear was caused by the band and not the venue. Lead guitarist kicked in his boost pedal which caused all ^%&* to break loose - tripled the volume through his and drummers monitors! Overall, I reckon the venue & sound guy were good, a step above the garage-eque holes I've played in the past (where blowing PA channels/speakers is normal).

I also use some vater decibel reducing earplugs when I go to concerts and such. People look at me funny... but hearing loss happens very quickly but gradually and by the time you realise it you are buggered... just ask Paul Gilbert.

I need to visit my business partner in Cape Town sometime... maybe if the stars align it can happen at the same time.

Make your drummer play to a click, then this doesn't happen and all your delays and modulation effects can be tempo synced which will add much more coherency to your overall sound ?

If you've know our drummer (sure you do, Cpt is mighty small) - then a click is out. I like the idea, with IEM's for the whole band - then I could go walk-a-about on the stage 8). But as I said, my timing is poor on a good day - so let's just say he was champ for playing with bronchitis and see what the next gig brings.

Pyjama Planet had a backing track and click....but the backing track disappeared in the 2nd song, never to re-appear. Their drummer was NOT happy. Me, I didn't notice, their performance were damn near flawless (imho).

                              5 days later
Got a some vid caps from the night - having two videographers in the bands playing has it benefits...1080p video with 4 angles! Not sure when the video will be ready (editing, mixing audio takes time), but the one rough draft I saw was promising 8) .
Aaannd a few of the crowd, Pyjama Planet and With Dawn
Fantastic snaps, looked awesome, is there no bootleg?
