Checked the net and the toob. not one of the examples for sale had that strange threaded bar on the back. I suspect it was added post production as a mod for some or other reason.
With the tail end being square would a whammy like bar not fit this socket to be used as a guitar stand? ???
Looking at the profile definitely not average guitar stand friendly... :?
Good hunting on the mystery ?

It's odd, nothing on talkbass about that kinda mod- I'd take out the insert and check if the paint is original. (If it's a post production mod then paint shouldn't match)
My two guesses :
1. Was a factory/dealer mod to have the guitar mounted for display/demo purposes (like for a NAMM show)
2. Was a user mod to attach the bass to a stand for hands free operation (like that korean guy playing two guitars at the same time).
My money's on 1...

Is it not for a guitar strap, allows you to spin the bass? Both sides of the strap attach to a single point in the back of the guitar. I have a vague memory of something like this deep in my beer battered brain
Something similar to this?

G-Man, is the bass body by any chance one of those odd rectangular jobbies?
It could be for the strap pivot - I can't remember my photobucket account details to post a pic, but the first picture in the second post here is what I'm thinking of:
https://www.talkbass.com/threads/hohner-b2b-headless-4-string.291667/
If I'm not mistaken the point of the pivot is to extend the upper horn for balance when standing and playing (there should be a strap button on the end of the plate), and to (ahem) pivot 180 degrees to form a lower bout so that the bass doesn't slide off your knee when you're seated.
Or I could be completely wrong, in which case I'll retreat to my self-imposed exile

The models had a triangular shaped curved "plastic" plate that screwed into that hole and the strap attached to that. I had one, but fitted standard attachments as I found the plate uncomfortable.

Thanks guys, that makes sense.
I have moved onto a 5 string Ibanez and I'm loving it. ?

Pierre-Cronje I did exactly the same. I loved my bass though, but sold it when I bought a JazzBass.
