  • Aging, music and making a medicinal noise

I watched the simpsons this week (S28e07), where grandpa has a "cubagasm"...

Part of this scene (not in the clip) is a reference to Professor Ellen Langer and studies on aging.

For me it's comics, guitars and music. I do have my first bass still (24 years later!), but I figured I don't need the exact instrument - I just need an instrument and some time to play some of those 'old' tunes. The Doors, The Beatles, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth - all the stuff I learnt when starting out.

Does it work? My older brother made a comment a while ago, I'm 40 going on 14 - and that I directly ascribe to music and playing an instrument.

So pick up yer axe and rock out favourites from your youth...It ain't nostalgia, it's medicinal ?
Yeah, play some metallica and get heart failure. We're old now, we now have to play older music than that.... Turn turn turn... And we have to sing the harmonies too... Aging, pffft.

Listen tomeyoung people, never adult! Adulting is a bahd bahd ting

But I will say this,... I did try metallicas battery on rocksmith, played it once and got a 200 note streak and 83% .... I was quite chuffed with myself, considering i was going blind from the sweat streaming from my forehead, my arm was killing me, my right hand holding the pick went into a spastic coma and my left hand fell off. Had to go lie down for three days so my lungs could recover from excessive use during one song! Rocksmith is evil!!!!
      Hell's yes!

Play those funky tunes, or metal tunes, or jazz tunes. But play, play, play.

listen. my old music is my folks' old music. i grew up listening to music released before i was born - no jokes! and i still reach for my guitar (when i reach for the damned thing - another story) to play ralph mctell, don mclean, songs by artists who wrote and released material in the few years leading up to my birth.

the 60s, 70s, them was the years my music was wrote. an explosion of genres - folk to rock and back again, everythang - the blues, jazz-blues, back to the blues, jazz-rock, fusion, rock, hard rock, metal (and the birth thereof, arguably from zep to sabbath and so on). oh. my. god. as fast as we could name a band or artist, another would pop up. and maybe another album would be released, and then the situation would be reversed. or someone new would come along and take his or her or their place at the top of the pile.

not top of the pops, top of the pile.

        there's a difference

ps - this may be my story, but i bet the general theme runs true-ish for most of us. yes?
