The biggest problem i found with mixpad was that the input level was way to high and not adjustable. I literally had to turn down my pedal and amp gain / master levels almost all the way, kinda takes the fun out of the whole thing. can barely hear myself playing....

Yip, all download-able, I don't have the links saved anywhere handy though, but there's enough info there to get google to find them for you.
Just a note, Reaper is 30 day trial - then you get a nag screen thereafter.
Recording is another world entirely - there is a LOT of stuff to learn, but -in bite size chunks- it's very doable. Dig around in the recording section of the forum for links to resources, There's many a post there to help get you started.
