Sorry this took so long. Was a few issues with server. Here are the entries:

studmissile - All I want to do is just rock http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/studmissile.mp3 Chuck Berry-esque, and a 50's rock 'n roll homage!

TokyoPOP - The Hell Outta Parchman http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/TokyoPOP.mp3 It was my attempt at capturing the sound of oooold school guys like Robert Johnson. It doesn't sound much like him and it deviated somewhere in the middle, but hell, it was worth a try.

I recently bought a little Samson Meteor mic which I used for this recording. Its alright enough for messing about with, just so long as the neighbours don't fart or sneeze. Sensitive little bugger! The guitar I used is a Taylor 114CE and the DAW was REAPER. I added a clip of an old, crackling vinyl to add to the effect. No mastering or tinkering otherwise, as I don't know how.

Well done gentlemen, was worth the wait...!

Studmissile : "you can play anything as long as it spins" - I'm a Chuck Berry fan and for me - the homage was spot on - could easily see this as a Chuck song, careful he doesn't lift it from you... ? A drum fill or three would have been nice (I'm sounding like a broken record here). Top work.

TokyoPop : Reaaalllyy enjoyed the recording and the playing - fantastic entry. Especially where you (to my ears) "deviated" into more jazz than blues? Not as Robert Johnson as I'm familiar with, though I'm not as familiar with his tunes as Chuck's. Perhaps the crackling was a tad loud in the mix on my system.

Tough, tough choice between the two.

:-\ had to flip a coin!
      Good work guys
Damn near as Chuck as it gets. Quality recording too!
These are both brilliant entries. Hats off!

Well done studmissile - will forward your information along.

Also, we are slowing things down with the competitions. Perhaps a challenge every month is getting too much for our busy schedules, so instead, we will do it every 2 months, see what kind of interest that will generate. So one month on, one month off.

If you have any other ideas, you welcome to send my way.

              Nice one, Studmissile.

This was fun. I'm looking forward to the next one.

How about changing up the format, on occasion? A left field idea - mini comps? Something like, write a hook/intro (10s max) or catchiest melody or a mental riff-fest (20-30s).

This ^^^ is pure genius. +10

My original idea behind the comps was for them to be short things people could enter quickly.

It was always supposed to be MORE about a) pulling your thumb out your bum and recording yourself and b) exercising your creativity.

The idea came from a game called "Photo Hunt" my wife used to play on DeviantArt.com.

You were given an idea or concept and you were supposed to go and photograph something. You had like 20 minutes to photograph edit, do minimal editing and post it.

                  This was done EVERY NIGHT!

The key here: Is it has to be something you can record quickly, submit and that's it.

I'd love to go back to something like that.

After all, I think there are a lot MORE people out there comfortable doing a 10-second recording of themselves than doing a whole song.

(I for one run for the hills when there's any mention of a complete song. It's just crazy complex.)

Adrian, what say you? We can level the playing field by making it a) max 30s long and b) max 1 guitar. No other instruments. That way even complete newbs can play.

If it fails, we've lost nothing for trying.
Or, how about, instead of having 1 "theme" and then having beginner-advanced etc, you have a bunch of themes, some simple small/short thing, some more long and complicated, that way everyone can choose what they'd like to attempt and then each theme gets judged on its own, or something like that.

Whoops, missed this! Thanks TokyoPOP, loved your Robert Johnson, beautiful playing, and the vinyl scratches was such a cool idea! Look forward to hearing more!

I also like the idea of shorter entries. Loads of potential there, and I think a lot more participants. Most players have a billion little jingles floating around in their creative clouds from just noodling around.
Although 30 seconds might be a little too short? How about a Minute Melody?

Let's try the super short thing first. If it flops, we don't do it again. If it works, we can keep the longer competitions around for every 2nd month or so.

A full 2min song is a full-on challenge, usually I find myself concentrating one one or two aspects of the challenge. Perhaps composition, or recording technique or mixing and occasionally during the process, I've thought that it would be cool just to have a mini comp just so I can focus on that one thing/skill I want to develop - instead of having to try and balance it with the other demands a full song requires.

I didn't intend my suggestion to replace the challenge, but I recall the fun of having a 1min challenge (way back in the day) and perhaps just a little shake up, now and again, of the format can help recapture some of the fun and banter around the challenges.

Was thinking yesterday that a super short one could be "leave me wanting more", 4 bars (10-15s?) of a progression that leaves the listener tuning in for the next episode (Like True Detective Season 1 ?)

I might actually attempt to record something.
