  • Sourcing/Buying of Pickups

Hey everyone,

This question may have been asked previously, but I am unable to find a similar topic.

I am considering buying some new pickups for my electric guitar, but can't find them on any of the South African online shops I know of.

Where do you usually buy/source your pickups from?
Is it easier to do import them and if so, which sites can I use with confidence?

Thanks.
    What are you looking for?
Ebay, Amazon and more or less any online US guitar shop. The Yanks really do provide stellar service, at least In my experience. 8)

Some one else can fill you in on the local options.
Thank you for the quick responses.

I am looking for some great quality passive humbuckers - Seymour Duncan SH-8 or something similar.

I will have a look at those sites and order once I have the necessary funds.
Don't be afraid to look at the boutique pickup makers. Their pickups don't actually work out much more expensive than buying Seymour Duncans et al. locally. I had great joy with Bareknuckle. Although the exchange rate was probably a lot better in those days.
ermagerd, I just went to look at the exchange rate now vs when I bought Bareknuckles. Wow. I paid like R2500 for a set in December of 2011 when the exchange rate was R11 something per £ now it is about R18 something :'( That makes a set of BKs about R4k now.

          Sigh...
Thanks beardedmoose. Will have a look at the Toneriders.
Search the threads, there is a bloke in Jo'burg who builds custom PUP's maybe he could give you a better price for what you have in mind?
Speak to Neil at Rude Rock pickups. Based in JHB and reasonably priced
^actually he's flipping cheap considering he basically winds each pickup by hand to your exact specs.

I can vouch for the Tone rider Generators you can get at The Gear Junkie. Used 2 already in desperate builds. Lovely tone. Even better price. And they throw a free coffee and some conversation in as well.

I still sing praises to this guy, he built me custom pickups for my strat about a year ago. The humbucker was R900 bucks and the single coil R450, I think. I told him exactly what I had in mind, he created them, installed them, set up my guitar and did custom wiring to my liking. My cheap strat sounds better than than some of my high end guitars, now. He knows a lot about pickups and gave good advice. Support the guy, you won't be disappointed.
