  • An opinion from the more experienced please

I've been wanting to get something LP shape with the 2vol 2tone setup for quite a while now.

Currently I am considering this: http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Les-Paul/Les-Paul-Tribute-Plus-Outfit.aspx

I can get one here (shipped and +vat +case) from the US for R 8500.00

I know buying unplayed is less than ideal, but besides that, can anyone give me an opinion? Is there something else I should be looking at?

I don't like the "burst" look, and I don't want to buy another single-colour finish so planning for the "midnight ebony" here. I am specifically looking for an LP without the pick guard.

Thoughts please? I'd appreciate it

Thank you
Not more than R 10k, 11k max if it really has to but will be pushing it. Hard case is absolutely important.
+1 to the 2nd hand comments - keep a eye on gumtree, the SA guitar sale/trade groups on facebook, music stores (E.g. 2015 clearance sale is kicking off at Music Mate).

You'll find what you want eventually. If you are Gassing hard, place a a few wanted ads.

Patience + cash = NGD + something spare cash for a valve combo?

Removed pick guard = holes where the screws go, not sure that wouldn't bother me.

The R 8.5k seemed reasonable to me consider it comes with a case and also the "real deal" pickups and decent Grover machine heads, is also a carved top. I also don't like the binding/frets situation on the normal epi plustop pro, I prefer the freeware going over the binding

I have been considering an LP for 6 months now, I looked at Tokai but out of my price range for similar spec I think.

I have a Marshall JVM410 combo, and a Laney Ironheart-60+2x12 which are both tube monsters so definitely don't need to spend there. The next amp I will buy will be a Mesa which unfortunately wont be doable with anything that is "Left from another purchase". Have looked at the second hand market for a few months, but, nothing that catches my eye really. Lots of standard epiphones which I was going to buy but when I tried them I didn't like it (pickups, binding, tops) The plustop pro was anyway R 5000 new without the case, so its not /that/ far off. I have also noticed a trend where the colours available in 2nd hand market are pretty opposite from what I like - its all tobacco bursts and solid white/blacks, neither of which I am interested in. I will go ad far as a cherry burst if it is really nice, but I definitely want to see some wood grain.

Or am I cuckoo with gas!?

we all cuckoo with gas, go ahead buy it and enjoy!
For a decent epiphone you shouldnt be paying for than 4500. That said is aesthetics worth another 4k to you? If its a single cutaway shape you want..( and it sounds like your into higher output pickups) then I would rather not look at your more traditional guitars . Heres a very good example of something you should rather be looking at:

Dont ever buy a guitar because it's the "look" your going for. Buy it because it feels like home.

A guitar is a extention of yourself (Not by the way it looks) but how it feels. For instance if your prefer a strat's neck you'll NEVER be happy with a Les Paul and vice versa.

              Oh-so-true... :?

You've done your research - so nothing left to do, but to do it...
damn that's a fine looking guitar.............

but as others have mentioned , look secondhand and maybe save a lil more an look at Tokai Customs or love rock models... but keep looking second hand...I see a white custom in classifieds for 10k.... now let me just mention objectively that the white custom is the pinnacle of guitar ownership ?

Dropped to 9k now.... check Sa Music store.
                    Yeah you know what...

That might be the one ?

Although now I am concerned about that white finish. Wouldn't scratch dent damage easily?

                    Arrrgghh!
It's a fine instrument. Im very happy with Tokai. Will never get rid of mine.

Thats Nitro Tokai used on that specific model and it will age beautifully. Guitars are made to play not to look at hehe. But if you take care it it will become even more beautiful in 50 years time.

just buy it, you can thank me later!
Looks like it's sold ... the hunting continues...
If you can't find a secondhand Tokai, look for a secondhand Gibson LP Studio, i have Epiphones and Gibsons, and you get some great guitars in both ranges, but also some shockers, but my general feeling is that if I pay R10k for an axe, it won't be for an Epi! I find the difference between the guitars quite big, with Gibson's feel, tone, etc. to be much better. If you find an older Korea made Epi, then grab it, those are killer!

Removed pick guard = holes where the screws go, not sure that wouldn't bother me. Just put the screws back into the holes,it also helps to keep them from getting lost!
