Hello All

I apologies for there being no competition in December, but I am finally back online, and with that I hope we are all juiced up and ready for another year of exciting challenges. This forum has seen a great increase in new participants, and the overall quality of the recordings has seriously increased. You can all be seriously proud of yourselves. For this year, we hope to see even more entrants, and more of the regulars. Lets get the numbers up ?

So lets start off with a bang, and with that I suggest the following theme:

Rhy-thm
I'm a firm believer that good rhythm is a quality inherent in good guitarists. Come up with a piece that focuses on something different from a rhythmic point of view. It can be a different time signature, or the inclusion of lots of stops and breaks, or emphasising a certain beat. Go wild, just try keep the focus on the rhythm.

I don't think I need to refer to any YouTube vids, as there are literally thousands of songs/bands that know how to work them rhythms. One example is Mars Volta, but even they are quite progressive. It doesn't have to be that extreme.

    Welcome back!

This is an interesting theme. I listen to mostly 4/4 or perhaps 6/8 music. The music I play is pretty basic for the most part... so this is going to be a stretch for me. Listening to some Mars Volta on youtube now to get some possible ideas. Work is still quiet...maybe I can sneak an entry in!!!

You can still do something in 4/4, but then perhaps you can do an interesting strum pattern, something more intricate.

Look at the hives, they do the rhythm thing well

      Bloc Party -

Other noticeable bands who play with 4/4 yet have rhythm as a feature include: Biffy Clyro, Foals, Strokes, Queens of Stone Age etc

SHWEEETTT!!!! Super keen. Never thought of writing a whole song without a melody, so that'll be interesting.

Very keen to hear how people keep things interesting without breaking out the solos. Great challenge! ?
I'm looking forward to getting stuck into these challenges this year.

If anyone submits something even half as good as The Mars Volta I will be amazed ?

I think there will be a lot of Meshuggah/Periphery-esque entries here. If you want to get technical, have a listen to some Animals As Leaders for rhythm inspiration.

EDIT: A good rhythm section doesn't mean an unusual time signature. Plenty interesting stuff can be done in 4/4.
Awesome theme! Excited to hear the entries.

Thanks for running awesome competitions, Adrian ?
it's been about a year since i entered one of these, and this is an awesome theme. about time i got my ab into g#.

I laid down some rough ideas last night, need to slap on some new strings and start recording in earnest.
I REALLY have NO rhythm at all so ill be sitting this one out.
