It's been 2 years since I bought the Scarlett 18i6 and Reaper, and apart from messing about in the beginning a bit and bringing in a few of my old Midi favorites, I am embarrassed to say I have done absolutely nothing of any value. So lurking on this forum, combined with a weekend in the mountain with friends, tickling the old Ibanez acoustic around the campfire, it finally re lit my fire.

This is also the first time I have ever recorded my voice and it was a shock to say the least. In my head I sound frikken magnificent. ??? Bubble burst bigtime :?

I had worked out a midi only backing for this song a good 15 years ago, which I used as the basis and decided to record all the guitars and voice. The Bass is an mp3 recording of the midi original, and I ported the drums from midi to ReaDrums. I don't have any effects units so I am relying purely on the Classic Stack setting on my Cube 30X and the RGX312 Humbucker for the crunch. Harmony compliments of Vocalist Live 3. Except for voice the instruments were recorded with no reverb or delay, I figured I have the flexibity to add it afterwards in Reaper.

Anyway this is a result, by no means the final one. Some advice on the balance, mix, etc, any thing in fact.

    It sounds very backtrackish.

Maybe check into EZ Drummer II or even this freebie: http://de-de.sennheiser.com/drummica

Too much reverb overall (especially the vocals), but the playing and singing isn't bad, with better "sound" it can work.
Sorry - downloaded the other day, but no time to comment until now.

I agree with Mixerboy - the elements are all there, but you need to spend time with each element to get it as good as possible, then start mixing, applying FX, etc..

Yup - mics are like microscopes, zooming in on any inadequacy and making it bigger. But if you can hear it, you can work towards fixing it.
        Thanks,

It did start out as a Backing track, albeit purely midi, and essentially that will be it's primary function, but I wanted to use this as the opportunity to learn the hows and whys of home recording.

I will redo the voices and any of the instruments without reverb, I think the bass track which is the only midi track left, has some reverb from the SC50 by default. WRT to Reverb, should there be any reverb in a recorded song. The Readrums VST has a level of reverb.

I iwll have a look at Ez Drummer and DrumMica
Never record tracks with reverb (or any effect that is not integral to the tone of an instrument), if you can avoid it. That gives you the option to add and tweak to taste in your recording software. It also lets you use the same reverb for most of the instruments, which helps to "glue" the sound together.

Also, generally many percussion (especially kick and snare) as well as bass instruments are mixed quite dry, especially in rock/pop. Listen to Led Zeppelin for a master class.
