Lets say you got no gear and you cant buy second hand gear can you put a live gig setup for a guitarist that would be loud enough to play with drums and sounds good all in a budget of R8000 that is everything except stuff like cables

Please post your price of the things you would get and see if you can do it I DARE YOU!!!!

Assuming you own an electric guitar, just use an SansAmp GT3 (maybe R1000 second hand) and DI it. It's maybe 80% of using a proper rig, but if the band is cooking, who cares? You can then save R7000 for more important things.
An Ibanez TSA30 and a cheapie Cort, Vintage, SX or similar fat Strat type guitar (ideally HSS). Simple, good sounding, covers a lot of ground and leaves some room for later upgrades (pickups, etc.).

If I needed a more flexible setup with some FX in the mix, I'd replace the amp with a modelling amp like a Fender Mustang III.

...but to be honest, in that price range, I'd probably not cripple myself by saying only new stuff. There is a wealth of good stuff around at great prices ATM.

Yes, you can easily do it. A 15W tube amp with a 12 inch speaker (a cub12 at about R4k), and a Yamaha Pacifica 112 (at about another 2.5K) will give you an amazing sounding and playing setup with money left over for cables and a tuner.

But why can you not get 2nd hand stuff. Locked in a guitar shop for life?

          "what he said"

and 2nd hand is way more bang for buck by far

            +1

... If you get good prices like me you can get an Epiphone ES-339 for R3600.00 and a Marshall Class 5 for R2000.00 then you still have some cash for a pedal tuner and a lekker overdrive pedal, you could probably swop out the tube amp for a bigger solid state like a Cube. R8000.00 will get you a long way if you are not to full of S&^%t. 4k for guitar, 4k for amp, sounds decent to me.
I said only new stuff because 2nd hand prices can differ alot from bargains people can get but new every one can get it at that price.
So to go second hand is alot better but that differ from place to place. I just really wanted to see and let other people see the cheapest way that everyone can get hold off to play a live gig
