Woooohaaaa!
I take it back, Cat 1 is where it's happening...Congratz Gents (& ladies?), take a bow, these are indeed epic and (imho) all nailing the brief. :applause:
@King, your entry could be a winner in Cat 2! Dig that bass line, is awesome. Slash's whistling melody is pretty damn fine work as well, teach me how to do that!

it's between slash and king, for me. although a very high standard from everyone. if these competitions are intended to get folks up and doing and trying things they might not have before, mission accomplished.
slash, lovely melody, extremely memorable and wonderfully delivered. the arrangement perfectly underscores it, works really well.
king, the ambience you create with that piece is brilliant, reminds me of billy joel's 'goodnight saigon/parris island' intro, although obviously completely different intentions.
very nice job, everyone

A little word for all if I may - I listened to the entries at least twice, so as per my style, some pro's and cons.
Slash - An excellent entry, I think when people think of Cinematic themes, they think of orchestral, and horn section etc, but this proves otherwise. A simple guitar and whistle did the trick. Granted, this would in my mind fit a Western theme, but I really enjoyed this. No real performance gripes, only production issue was that the track was soft and you could have boosted it a little - also song was a touch too long, I don't think this song needed to be as long as it was, but that's not a major thing
Winter - A very exciting intro, I love the rough stutters, and the chords are cool. You built into the song very nicely. It all sounded very natural, and big. The song lost a lot of momentum for me however when it got about halfway, you went into that nice lead part, but the timing changed, or it just didn't go into that smoothly. If you had worked on that, you may have gotten my vote. But an excellent excellent entry all around.
Howe - I think you are an obvious choice for many. This was great. You chose the right chords, the right melody, the right instruments. I think your next entry can be moved into category 2! ? Having said that, this song does sound awfully similar to the Inception theme track - well certainly heavily influenced to say the least. The guitar tone was a little too sharp for me, it could of been warmer, and dirtier, but that is a matter of taste, and I didn't count that against you too much. Lastly, the ending was a bit 'out of nowhere'. I think you could have done a little more to end with that, I loved the delay idea with just the guitar, but it was just too sudden.
Green - I picture this playing to a thriller kind of movie. It had a nice dark undertone, a real sense of mystery, although when you did the lead parts, you did tend to throw in some major sounding licks which made the listener really wonder what is going on. A good entry all round, the chord choices were suitable, my crit for you would be to try work on not hitting bum/dud notes so much on the guitar. The nice thing about recording is that it captures EVERYTHING, and the reverse is true i.e. the bad thing about recording is that it captures EVERYTHING. So just keep that in mind for next time.
Collen - Ok firstly, whilst I'm laughing, I just want to say that 'shot' sounded like a bad cough hahaha. I thought it was you the first time I heard it. A good entry, I battled to easily place it to a movie genre, but I felt it was a Western in the end. It started light, ended heavy. You built the song nicely, with light playing, light accompaniment, and then just gradually build. My main crit would be to try make the other instruments work better with each other, i.e. there were moments when it was just you playing guitar, where a piano or another guitar in the backround could have really helped made that lead pop out. Also, the volume on them could have been controlled a bit better, I got a fright at some points when listening to these random instruments jumping out at me. But a good entry, and I hope to hear more.
King - I also think you can move up a Category for next time. This was a quality entry. And very different from the others. The bass sounded nice and warm. The samples were tasteful. The guitaring was obviously my favourite, very jazzy. I'm not sure what type of movie I'd place this on, its upbeat, but it's not a comedy or anything like that. The ending was very good as well. I don't actually have any crits on this. I mean anything I don't like is purely a matter of taste - but I can't say there was anything wrong with it in my opinion.
In the end, I must give my vote to Slash, cause i feel he did the most with the least. Only 2 tracks, and he created what I would imagine to be a good theme song for a Western.
*And just to clear all doubt, even though I have the ability to know who entered what, I can assure you at this point I have pretty much forgotten who entered, and what songs are with who. I have them in my book, but I only check that once voting closes.
