Ibanez breaking new ground...again

So Ibanez have stepped forward as the first big production company to start offering a multi-scale, unfortunately it's a bass, but if things go well this may bleed over into their guitars. The idea of a Multiscale RG 8 string already has me salivating ?

I've never played a multiscale (Fan-Fret) bass before, but I'd love to have a go! The principle makes so much sense to me, but in practice, I'd imagine hitting the low C on the first fret to be a bit of a stretch backwards?

Yer, Dingwall were really the first to utilise the concept a good decade or two ago. They were for a long time the only company offering such a system. Due to their popularity, other 'boutique' and custom luthiers started to use the concept by 'special request', but now most bass guitar luthiers are offering it at least as an option, if not a stock model.

I think its a great thing, and can only move the prehistoric concept off the electric bass forwards.

yeah, lots of people have already done it, but in relation to total market share those people are nothing more than a drop in the ocean, Ibanez however has a big enough share that their moves tend to force the competition into exploring new territory.

Much like how they came out with a production 8 string and now pretty much all big manufacturers make them in multiple tiers.

If it goes that route I will be impressed, but it's so cool to see them testing the water as they did kinda go through a really reserved period where they sorta dialed down the crazy a bit.
