Prodipe Microphones
Visashi
Hi,
Has anyone tried the Prodipe V85? Its a 50's retro looking mic. Im looking to get a descent mic that won't cost me an arm and a leg. The Shure sm58 is already pricing over 2000 bucks and I'm not willing to pay that at the moment. What can you guys recommend to me that is affordable and also good quality?

No idea on the Prodipe, but you generally get what you pay for with mics. For tight budget options look at the Shure SM48 or the Audix mics.
[EDIT] You can also often find secondhand SM58s for +/- R1K. You just have to make sure they are not fakes/buy from a reputable s/h dealer. I think Gear Junkie has some ATM.

If the setup in this video is the way it was then it's a slightly scewed shootout as the mics are in 2 totally different spots
Here's another [maybe] more accurate video:
I have the TT1 but haven't done a comparison between it and the SM57, it's not a bad mic.

i tried out some prodipe mics last week at the gear junkie, and compared them to sm58 / 57 and i must say they sounded very good (alot better than the tinny 58 on vocals that is :-[)

I also have never heard these mics, but I do have a few SM58's I'm parting with if you're interested?

Sm58's "tinny"? I'd never describe them as that...

I've had the TT1 for about 5 years now. For the price (I paid R399 brand new), it really isn't a bad microphone. It is a lot more Bass-y and toppy than a SM58 when you compare both of them with flat EQ settings. I have recorded some acoustic guitars with the TT1 and also mic-ed up a Pedal Steel going through a Twin Reverb and have no complaints in the sound quality in that regard.
However, after 5 years, the mic's cover and casing is starting to show some rust and it seems to have lost a bit of "response" cos the volume drops off dramatically if you are more than 8 cm from the mic (for vocal use). I'm pretty sure this is because of normal wear and tear.
Also, in a live environment, it is much more prone to feedback than the trusty old SM58. Hence, I old faithful still remains my mic of choice in any situation.....SM58 forever..........and SM57 forever.
I have no experience with the Prodipe mic you are interested in, but as was mentioned by Alan, when it comes to music gear, 99% of the time, price is a good reflection on quality. You get what you pay for.
