Hey folks, I'm about to buy a budget 'mini' headphone amp for my little studio for around R700 - R800, either a Behringer, SM Pro Audio, or Samson...

Has anyone had any good experiences with one of these over another?

Thanks,
A
    hi Atmarama,

Go and have a look at garage1217.com. The guy build valve headphone amps, he is located in US... Very exciting. Worth the extra buck. Have the project ember and dont think i have heard anything so good for price and if you dont like the sound... Hot swop the valve and heard something else

Aren't those headphones and not a headphone amp? ? Very, very decent headphones though.

I did see your add thanks sharonzaz. I was hoping to hear forum members thoughts/opinions on these units and similar Samson S-Amp and SM Audio Pro units which can be picked up new from R600 - R800 locally at Orange Music and Soundselect etc...

The terrible reviews on the Behringers fizzing out after a month or so have made me a bit weary.
Nothing wrong with Behri's headphone amps, patch bays or controllers. Nothing fancy, but they don't have to be. Cheap enough that when they self destruct in a few years time, easy and cheap to replace.

Mr T was selling a Rolls recently. Otherwise the Behri, SM Pro or Samson are all pretty much of a muchness.
I have been using the Samson S amp at the studio, and has had some rough use over the the past year, and still working, just make sure the plugs on your headphone cables is good if you are using converters

Thanks for your reply Alan. Good to hear your thoughts... So do you reckon they'll all have more or less the same output and will not be lacking in that department?

The SM Pro XPH4 has a mono/stereo switch which could come in handy I think... But only a mini 3.5mm TRS or RCA input

The QAmp looks like an upgrade to the HPH4 but no mono/stereo switch

The Samson looks like a little tank and possibly the most rugged of the lot

This little Berry can be had for under 400 SA ront...
