  • ok, so i finally have a 'complaint' about the ads

but it's just a little one. and it's in 'inverted commas'.

most of the links on the forum, when clicked, open in a new tab. the ads, well, don't. so if you see something you'd like to look at, you have to go to the calorie-burning effort of right-clicking and selecting 'open in new tab'.

what do you guys think - worth looking at? worth the extra work? or just worthy of a quick 'shut up, dom'.

i can take it. i'm a big boy

The mouse wheel is not just a wheel, it can also be used as a button. Pressing down on the wheel will act like a third mouse button. This can be used to open a web page in a tab by clicking the wheel on any link and can also be used to close a tab by clicking the wheel on any open tab.

ah, but i work on a mac. and i use a magic mouse. no 'wheel'. and all the functions of my magic mouse are already assigned to make my day just a little more magic than it already is. if you follow.

I'm seeing the exact opposite. Most links on this forum DO NOT open a new tab for me. But I just clicked on an ad (why not? apparently there are lots of hot single ladies who want to meet me) and that opened a new tab.

Not all browsers behave in exactly the same way in this regards, and some are customisable with options giving you some control on when a new tab will be opened.

ok. i retract my 'complaint' about the ads. and i now, hereby, formally make a complaint against all browser developers and their stubborn refusal to collude.

                howzat?

And pressing Ctrl + Left mouse button opens in new tab, Shift + Left mouse button opens in new window.
Great post Doomsower. I just assumed everyone knew about middle-click.

(It's also useful for closing tabs - just middle-click them. Works in most browsers. Oh and if you're a champ and use Linux, you can copy and paste by just selecting text from the source and middle-clicking in the target. I can't live without that!)

Regarding the ads, it's totally against Google's Terms & Conditions to make the ads open in new windows.

I knew about Shift but not about Ctrl. You, sir, are a gentleman ?
Ha ha, shot dude. Its amazing how these little things actually make life easier.

I did a quick google an it looks like our magic mouse bound friends will be able to use this in Safari.
I still think it is cruel to keep a mouse without a exercise wheel. :'(

Who says we all have a mouse? A lot of the time I use a notebook machine with one of those pad thingies instead of a mouse.

What normally works there is pressing both left and right buttons at the same time.

Thanks. But as I said - I am seeing the exact opposite to what Dom reports - irrespective of whether I use a mouse or not. Anyways, as somebody who has directed a fair bit of development that has relied on web browsers for a front end I'd not assume that our average user is a power user. I've spent too much time explaining what a "right click" is, though I think the world has probably caught up with that one by now.
