Crap! (i.m.h.o.) ?
To a teenager the looks might be important, but I'm the other side of 50, and I'm more impressed by the "feeling" you put into the music.

I remember being disappointed when i first saw frank black
But then i saw kim and it was all ok

This paper pointedly did not look at teenagers. Bear in mind, this is not saying that people will prefer a good looking crap band to a bad looking good one. They're saying people have a preference for the more exciting looking performers, all else being equal. And that bias may be quite strong.DaFiz wrote: Crap! (i.m.h.o.) ?

Just think about it: for every Mike and the Mechanics, there are 20 famous bands that don't look like they just wandered in off the street ?
Super jealous.Wormwood wrote: I remember being disappointed when i first saw frank black

But bear in mind, they're not saying the best looking people are preferred. They're saying the most visually appealing wins. So Frank Black with his screaming and intensity is much more interesting that a really boring but good-looking fellow.
Duh. It's a SHOW.
Edit: We could be better at dressing up. But at very least a performer should look like they're into the music (unless it's a Kraftwerk type approach - but that is still an approach).

You say duh. But we've both seen too many bands that don't believe this at all. "They must like us. I'm playing really well."
Yep true. Just because a musical performance is good does not mean a little stage presence, effort into appearance etc. won't elevate it... because it will. There's a whole other art there...
Edit: I guess what I'm saying is the BURNS NEED TO RETURN ?

It's a "duh" one for me too. Performance blends more than one sense, all reinforcing one another and the visual sense is the strongest, so while it's not the focus with music, adding the visual aspect is the easiest way to reinforce it. Add the feel of a live rhythm section moving the floor and the listener ends up with an experience.
