Which of you guys were rocking the koppi this year?

Deftones were incredible, actually mind blowing for me (a big fan) - I was definitely not expected them to be such a good live act - as I had heard his voice can be a bit off some times...

But I would go as far to say as their perfomance was absolutely flawless, very energetic and his voice and well everything sounded better than it does on the album.

Super good line up as well, pretty much played all the songs i wanted to hear (ok except for knife party and Passenge but oh well...) ?

Well thats my 2c, if you watched them would like to hear echoing or contrasting opinions if you have them!
Agreed. They were super amazing. Flawless indeed. SO tight, energetic, precise. I'm not a big fan, but they absolutely blew me away!

They did paly Knife Part though! ? what drugs were you taking? hahaha. I guess they don't play Passenger because he doesn't want to sing someone elses parts...
It was damn good! I was a bit of a Zombie by that stage, but I enjoyed it non the less. Played a lot of new stuff that I'm not too familiar with, but I enjoyed them just as well as the oldies. Got some catching up to do!

Really!? must slipped into a state of trance due to pure awesomeness then!

How was the Cape Town show? stage wise, attendance etc? how was the sound? Cause without doubt I can say that the deftones gig at koppi was some of the best sound i have ever heard - borderline perfection.
I thought it was a really good show. I really enjoyed it. I'm quite a fan, so it was cool seeing some of that stuff live. Chino was pretty much screaming straight into my face when he was in the crowd the one time (we were at the front at Stef's side of the stage) - that was cool!

Despite all of that, I didn't think it lived up to the hype - people were going on before the show about how it was going to be this amazing, mind-blowing, best experience of your life sort of thing and for me it just wasn't. Not to knock the show; it WAS good and seeing songs live that have pretty much become a permanent part of my brain from repeatedly listening to those albums over the years WAS super cool. I just think we build up these international acts way too much and I'm finding it harder to be blown away by them. Maybe it's just because I've become quite cynical about the whole big concert thing. Maybe it's because the standard of our local acts is on the way up. Anyway, the cool thing about if for me was walking away thinking that it was really cool that I was able to enjoy the local bands just as much and that they were my favourite part of the Koppi weekend. I felt proud of SA music...
Also, the one thing that I found strange (and disappointing) was that the crowd didn't give them an encore. It did look like the techs were packing the stuff up straight away, but still, there were a few half-hearted "we want more's" and then the crowd buggered off.
hey everything in Cape Town was really good. I wasn't too sure what to expect, as even at their prime Deftones were not really known as a great live band. I dont think they disappointed at all, and their set selection was great...but they didn't blow me away as they would have done 15-year-old-Andrew.
As for venue and crowd and what not, that was all awesome. Great venue, awesome sound and lights. And attendance was not great. The golden circle was packed (that's a lot of sixhundredrands), the general standing had maybe one eighth of its capacity (not that many 450s) and seated was fairly well populated with fine old folks such as my self (what? I'll pay R150 less if I get to sit down).
Yellowcard played between Manchester Orchestra and Deftones...If I had been in Yellowcard I would have felt like a complete amateur, and quite honestly I don't know how they manage to get people to pay to bring them to other countries to play.CrashCarBurn is several orders of magnitude better and lives right here. In fact, Yellowcard totally reminded me of the generic Jozi punk band of around 8 years ago. I'd not have been upset watching them at Bugsys and I can only assume one of them is the little brother of Billie-Joe Armstrong, or I have NO IDEA how they managed to achieve the success that they have. I actually find it really hard to explain how that singer has made a living as a singer for the last fourteen years...it blows my mind. If I was as bad at my job, I'd likely get fired. OK , Rant done.

Manchester Orchestra were the best band on the evening by several country miles. I'd not really heard them before, but wow, what a band.

I believe there was an encore man, i also said the same thing and then all my friends told me that they already had the encore, which confused me - i must of been a little too wasted at that stage.

I agree what you saying about these "big concerts" - Chili Peppers was a hell of a disappointment for me - mostly on the sound side of things, i couldnt hear crap, it was incredibly loud etc. (from where i was standing at least) and the last few other big concerts were a similar experience.

But the show really did impress me a hell of a lot... Mostly just how fantastic it sounded - Its the best sound (at least from where I was standing) i have heard - which makes the biggest difference! i dunno maybe the sound was not the best up front, i always avoid the front for that reason - middle center was a winner!
Also, the professionalism of the band, you can see they have been doing this a long time, and such a energetic and great front man chino is.

Anyway glad everyone had an awesome koppi this year, it was a super fun party and respect to all the local bands that did such a great job.

                    Really? ???

I missed it too. And I wasn't even wasted.

The sound wasn't too bad up front - the vocals were a little bit muddy and indistinct but it was good other than that. I've head much worse. It's always a trade-off at gigs this size though - get absorbed into the sea of people moshing and not be able to move unless it moves; can't see 'cause I'm short, sore back from craning my neck to see anything etc., or go to the front and have a comfortable spot with a good (in this case, amazing) view but not great sound.

I see the predicament, luckily im a tall mofo so thats not too much of a problem for me. Must of been cool to check out Chino so close, while he was crowd surfing and screaming into a sea of people! the blowup doll came from one of my friends friends who was up in the front as well... that was funny!
The Cape Town show was wonderful! Manchester Orchestra were fantastic, Yellowcard were booooooooring, and Deftones blew me away! The sound was terrible at the front, but really, really good if you stood a bit further back. The setlist was perfectly suited to a first show in a country they've never played... a lot of old songs with some new ones. And so tight, so tight. Man, I wish more big bands put as much effort into their shows. It was a little embarrassing there were so few people there. ☹

Really? How many do you reckon?
Eish, I couldn't say, but definitely far emptier than other concerts I've attended at GW. The general standing seemed very empty and there seemed to be almost no-one in the seated area.
Shit guys, Cape Town is getting a terrible reputation for having no interest in live shows. everytime i mention a concert in cape town all my pretoria friends joke and mock that no-one will attend.

WHY IS THIS!? is it because everyone is too stuck up and tranced out or 'trendy" to go and support live rock bands? >☹ >☹
sorry just makes me angry, soon enough touring bands will think twice about cape town if they continually battle to fill attendance.

that being said, the pictures deftones took from the stage looked their was a decent a crowd there...

                              anyway! deftones rock!
My first rule of concertgoing - get as close to the sounddesk as possible. That's usually where the sound is best, plus I get to perv at the desk and outboard gear.
mine is be as close to the bar as possible....rehydrate rehydrate rehydrate being the mantra...

sound gets better as the evening goes on ...funny enough

I think what you mean to say is Pretty much every band from JHB from 8 yeats ago has tried to sound like Yellowcard.
(I am no fan of either) but just pointing that out
Pretty sure they didn't play Knife Party at Oppi.

As for the gig, agree with all said so far. They absoutely blew me away. Tempest was spectacular, starting with Rocket Skates was great, and Be Quiet into Summer was sublime. Chino is definitely one of the top metal Frontmen of our generation. And man, Stef's guitar sound!
