ja, I reckon Tokai is spot on.... I did a bit of trawling on the greatest guitar threads, who do u most admire etc etc etc ......only male guitarists mentioned...we really are a bunch of sexist individuals ....ok ok shoot me just saying.... someone mentioned lita ford..... well she was a good guitar player but I think her main reason for "Semi" success was her stint in the runaways and the fact she was damn hot (still is) ...sexist maybe but that's the fact I am afraid..... if I recall the runaways were a manufactured girl group selected on looks first, ability second....joan jett et al

I think women just need to be less sensitive about stuff like this. Instead of writing an article or blogging and moaning about it online start woodshedding. Until we have a female equivalent of Stairway to heaven, Little Wing, Moby Dick etc. to change the perceptions out there, nothing is going to change. Somewhere out there is the next "xxxxxx" hero, sitting alone in their room practicing guitar/drums/bass rather than venting in their diary (although the latter could be the next Axl).

There is nothing wrong with all the great guitarists being mentioned being male. If the majority of recording guitar players back in in the 50s, 60s etc were male, is there any surprise our guitar heroes are all male? If you compose a list of the greatest vocalists of all time, you will get a very different gender equation. Many of the greats have told stories about sitting in their rooms for hours at a time practicing, honing their craft. Why should the fact that they were mostly male be held against them. Bonny Raitt is a great guitarist, but she is no SRV. She has an incredible voice though which blows SRV out of the water.

So instead of moaning (I deliberately used that word as not to offend the PC on the forum) about stereotypes and gender equality take an active approach and change perceptions by becoming a master in your craft. If some asshole then still treats you like a "lesser" musician ignore them. The ignorant are everywhere and they are breeding, get over it.

To me the big difference is in the kind of statements:

"Hey, a girl guitarist!" - implying it's less common to see female guitarists. Stats will probably show this is true.
"You're pretty good for a girl" - implying girls are generally crap at guitar. Really??

One's an observation (could be seen as highlighting a stereotype though) . The other's insulting.

Really? So next time a woman says to you "you play pretty well for a fat bald guy" you'll take it as an innocent misconception? Coz, well, everybody knows rockers should at least be good looking.

A guy that assumes it's a compliment that you happen to be born looking a certain way is an idiot.

Heh, a mate was a drummer a local metal band, one day they all came around for a jam. The talented 23 y/o lead guitarist remarked during the jam..."you play ok for a old guy...a bit slow though", I was 32 at the time :?

As tempting it was to get all spinal tap and grab my metal setup in a fit of Ego, I stuck with the strat and jammed with the drummer and bassist till eventually the guitar hero gave up, went home while we all just had some fun grooving.

Last year, I was fascinated to learn that, in ancient greek, "Ego eimi" translates as "I am"/"I exist"

The whole women-belong-in-the-kicthen joke is not funny. I'm 27 and I have heard millions of varieties of it. Not funny.
Also, I don't care if it's just a joke, it's a harmful joke.
